Draft guide update - March 3
Catchers
Miguel Montero (Diamondbacks) - Down $1
Chris Snyder (Diamondbacks) - Up $1
Montero’s status for Opening Day is in serious doubt because of his broken finger, so I’ve dropped him from $2 to $1. Snyder will be worth using in two-catcher mixed leagues until Montero returns and maybe beyond.
Johnny Estrada (Nationals)
Jesus Flores (Nationals)
Estrada (elbow) remains at a dollar, even though it looks like Flores may be needed to fill in for him initially.
Jason Kendall (Brewers)
Batting ninth wouldn’t help Kendall’s meager value at all, but the difference between there and eighth wasn’t enough to cost him a dollar. It might actually result in an extra steal or two over the course of the year.
Vance Wilson (Tigers)
Wilson seems doubtful to be ready for Opening Day after Tommy John surgery, putting the Tigers in the market for a backup catcher.
Joe Mauer (Twins)
I gave Mauer a few extra at-bats since it appears that he might hit second. It didn’t alter his value much. Batting behind Adam Everett and Carlos Gomez/Jason Pridie doesn’t figure to result in many RBI opportunities.
J.D. Closser (Cubs)
Damian Miller (Free agent)
Josh Paul (Rays)
Closser and Paul were given token projections, even though they don’t figure to make their current teams. Miller seems uninterested in finding work, so I zeroed him out.
First baseman/DHs
Dan Johnson (Athletics) - Down $1
Mike Sweeney (Athletics)
I have both Johnson and Sweeney at a dollar right now. Odds are that only one of the two will be with the A’s on Opening Day. Johnson might find a better opportunity elsewhere.
Lyle Overbay (Blue Jays) - Down $1
Judging from John Gibbons’ lineups to date, it appears that Overbay will open the season hitting seventh. That’s lower than I anticipated originally.
Prince Fielder (Brewers)
Fielder could knock in a couple of extra runs because of the decision to bat Kendall ninth.
Albert Pujols (Cardinals) - Down $1
Concern about Pujols’ elbow has already died down since people have actual baseball to talk about again, but the Cardinals still might choose to give him more rest than usual in the early going.
Conor Jackson (Diamondbacks) - Up $1
The Diamondbacks never did bring in anyone to challenge Jackson, and now they have him batting third this spring. He’s one of my favorite picks for 2008.
Brad Wilkerson (Mariners) - Up $1
Safeco isn’t an ideal ballpark for Wilkerson’s game, but it looks like he’ll get all of the at-bats he can handle to prove that he still has something left. I think he’ll help the Mariners more than fantasy teams.
Carlos Delgado (Mets)
Olmedo Saenz (Mets)
I didn’t drop Delgado a dollar this time, but I’m not very high on him at all. His body seems to be betraying him at age 35.
Nick Johnson (Nationals) - Up $1
I still have modest projections for both Dmitri Young and Johnson, but with the Nationals very open to trading one of the two, that could change in a heartbeat. Because of the trade possibility, I gave Johnson some at-bats without taking any away from Young.
Tony Clark (Padres) - Down $1
Robert Fick (Padres)
Adrian Gonzalez (Padres)
Clark’s arrival figures to result in a few more days off for Gonzalez this year. Still, I don’t think Clark will have any fantasy value in Petco.
Sean Casey (Red Sox) - Down $1
David Ortiz (Red Sox)
Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox) - Down $1
Casey will be OK in a limited role in Boston, but he shouldn’t get enough playing time to amass any value.
Youkilis’ fall is all about his spot in the batting order. The Red Sox have been hitting him sixth and seventh this spring. I had him penciled in as a 100-run guy from the No. 2 spot.
Jeff Baker (Rockies) - Up $1
Todd Helton (Rockies)
Baker disappointed as a sleeper last year, but now that he’s very much in the mix at second base, he’s back as an intriguing $1 pick this spring.
Helton was given a few more at-bats with the move to the third spot in the order.
Justin Morneau (Twins) - Up $1
Morneau picked up a dollar because of the news that he’ll bat cleanup this year. The extra at-bats should give him one more homer, and he’ll probably score a few more runs.
Robb Quinlan (Angels)
Jeremy Brown (Athletics)
Mark Sweeney (Dodgers)
Greg Norton (Mariners)
Doug Mientkiewicz (Pirates)
Chris Shelton (Rangers)
Eric Hinske (Rays)
Shea Hillenbrand (Free agent)
