Draft guide update - Feb. 19
Here's the rundown of every outfielder adjusted in the projections over the last couple of weeks.
David Newhan (Astros)
Travis Buck (Athletics) - Up $1
Todd Linden (Athletics)
Josh Anderson (Braves)
Joe Borchard (Braves)
Juan Gonzalez (Cardinals)
Ryan Ludwick (Cardinals)
Gonzalez got little more than a token projection. He probably would cut into Ludwick’s value if he made the team, but I don’t expect him to do so.
Andre Ethier (Dodgers)
Nook Logan (Dodgers)
Juan Pierre (Dodgers) - Down $1
Matt Kemp (Dodgers)
Ethier moved up $1 in the 4x4 rankings, but the extra at-bats at Pierre’s expense weren’t quite enough to add a dollar in 5x5.
Dan Ortmeier (Giants) - Up $1
Aaron Rowand (Giants)
Nate Schierholtz (Giants)
It’s appearing more likely that Ortmeier will be the Giants’ first baseman on Opening Day. I still have him at just $1. He projects as a pretty awful regular. Schierholtz would be better, but there’s been little to suggest that he’ll get a shot at what would be another new position for him.
Rowand dropped slightly with the news that he’s set to hit fifth at the start of the season. The only reason he didn’t lose a dollar is because I decided to give him one more steal. I wasn’t very high on him anyway.
Wladimir Balentien (Mariners)
Bronson Sardinha (Mariners)
Ichiro Suzuki (Mariners)
Balentien picked up a few more at-bats with Adam Jones’ departure, but it wasn’t enough to put him at $1. Talk about him making the Mariners as a reserve is nonsense.
Ichiro was barely tweaked.
Alfredo Amezaga (Marlins)
Luis Gonzalez (Marlins)
Cameron Maybin (Marlins) - Up $1
Cody Ross (Marlins)
Josh Willingham (Marlins)
Gonzalez’s arrival resulted in some other Marlins outfielders losing at-bats. Maybin, though, gained a dollar, as it looks like the Marlins will do nothing else to bring in competition in center.
Ryan Church (Mets)
Brady Clark (Mets)
Ben Johnson (Mets)
Church picked up a few more at-bats because of Carlos Gomez’s exit.
Adam Jones (Orioles) - Up $2
Jay Payton (Orioles)
Tike Redman (Orioles)
Luke Scott (Orioles)
Since he’s now more of a lock to remain a regular all season, Jones was bumped $2 with the trade to Baltimore. The ballpark switch also doesn’t hurt at all.
Jody Gerut (Padres)
Josh Hamilton (Rangers) - Up $1
Kevin Mench (Rangers) - Down $1
David Murphy (Rangers) - Down $1
Hamilton, apparently set to bat second initially, was moved up $1 in 5x5 leagues. The change didn’t help him in 4x4 leagues.
Mench and Murphy are now $0 players. Once the situation begins to get sorted out, there should be at least one decent $1 pick between those two, Nelson Cruz, Jason Botts and Chris Shelton.
Coco Crisp (Red Sox) - Down $1
Bobby Kielty (Red Sox)
The increasing likelihood that Crisp will open the season with the Red Sox dropped him $1.
Scott Podsednik (Rockies) - Down $6
Ryan Spilborghs (Rockies)
Cory Sullivan (Rockies)
I thought Podsednik would do quite a bit better as a free agent than possible fifth outfielder in Colorado. He comes in at $1 after signing a minor league deal.
Carlos Gomez (Twins) - Up $2
Jason Pridie (Twins)
Denard Span (Twins)
That’s how I rank the center field candidates in Minnesota at the moment: Gomez, Pridie, Span. I have Pridie as the best player of the three, but Gomez’s speed does give him the most fantasy upside of the group.
Hideki Matsui (Yankees)
That Matsui’s knee is still causing him some trouble resulted in a barely visible tweak to his projection. His dollar value didn’t change, though it would if he’s still having problems in March.
