Pale Hose at it already

The White Sox hardly seem off to a great start after last year's debacle. Danny Richar is in the doghouse instead of in camp, Mark Buehrle's shoulder is barking and Ken Williams is already ticked off at his biggest acquisition, Nick Swisher.

Says the Sun-Times:

After Nick Swisher led off (Monday's intrasquad game) with a single, Williams yelled down to his new player, ''We run hard to first base in Chicago!''

Williams then paused, turned to the coaching staff and said, ''Make sure he [bleeping] hears what I said.''

A) It's an intrasquad game.
B) Jerry Owens did hustle. And he ended up leaving with a "tweaked" groin.
C) Swisher typically plays pretty hard. It's one of the reasons the White Sox gave up their farm system to get him. I don't recall anyone ever taking issue with his effort.
D) Yelling at him? Telling the coaching staff to yell at him? Is that the best way to handle anything? Especially from a GM. If only they had a manager with some fire.
E) It's an intrasquad game.

I dislike seeing players jog to first as much as the next guy, but the false hustle doesn't do anyone any good. If Swisher loafs during a regular-season game, by all means, tell him to grab some pine. But it's not to anyone's benefit that he risks an injury on Feb. 25.

Status report

I'm still playing catchup after my vacation, so blog entries have been scarce. With games starting up again this week, I think I'll have more to say here. However, since I do all of the game recap news during the spring -- I prefer to wait for the regular season to start before getting help there -- I'm still not going to have a lot of time for entries.

Also with the start of games will come the daily draft guide updates. I'm still behind right now, particularly on the top 250 lists, but everything will be kept current during March.

Regarding Pujols

I'm not touching Albert Pujols' projection yet. Reports suggest his sore elbow is causing him more concern than ever right now, but it's something he's been playing with since 2003 and there hasn't been any actual indication that he's damaged his ligament further. It's something he can continue to play with until the day he blows it out and maybe even past then. It's not a problem when he hits. It is when he throws, but that's less of an issue for a first baseman. He could do nothing but underhand the ball all year and still be one of the league's most valuable players.

I can envision a scenario in which Pujols calls it a season in August and undergoes surgery if the Cardinals are out of contention. That's what Luis Gonzalez did back in 2004. If Pujols waits until October to undergo surgery, he'd have a much more difficult time getting ready for the start of 2009. Still, I think it's a pretty good bet that he'll play out the year and see what happens. I wouldn't necessarily gamble a first-round pick on it -- with the weaker than usual supporting cast in St. Louis, I have him considerably lower in the rankings than usual anyway -- but I also wouldn't be trying to get out now if I owned him in a keeper league.

Back from vacation

I'm back after a week off, so expect the draft guide updates to start up again. After I do a little more catching up, I'll start working on the hitters, probably outfielders first. Monday's column is likely to be late, as the rankings will take priority this weekend.

Draft guide update - Feb. 7

Just the handful of starting pitching updates today.

Curt Schilling - Down $9
Clay Buchholz - Up $5
Jon Lester

Julian Tavarez, Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden will also get have to get innings bumps as a result of Schilling's possible career-ending shoulder injury. I had Schilling at 195 innings and $11 previously. Now he's at 83 and $2. Buchholz goes from late-round sleeper in mixed leagues to legitimate middle-round pick. Lester, who I already had penciled into the rotation, was given a few more innings, but not enough to move him up a dollar in 5x5 leagues. He did climb $1 in 4x4 leagues.

Kelvim Escobar - Down $3
Joe Saunders - Up $1
Ervin Santana

Santana jumped $1 in 4x4 leagues. He and Saunders both appear to be assured of rotation spots with Escobar likely to miss most of April due to a sore shoulder.

Draft guide update - Feb. 6

Just a quick update today. The Diamondbacks went against my guess and picked Brandon Lyon to close over Tony Pena, leading to a big adjustment for each. Lyon jumped from $5 to $14, while Pena went from $17 to $11. Obviously, I still think there's a good chance Pena will finish the year with the job, though the difference between the two probably isn't going to make an impact in the standings either way. I have Pena with a 3.41 ERA and Lyon at 3.71.

Lyon, a groundball pitcher, does get a boost to $17 in 4x4 leagues. I have him below Eric Gagne and Kevin Gregg in strikeout leagues, but he leaps over both with K's taken out of the equation.
