Bedard trade repercussions

Assuming the deal goes down as Bedard for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman and another prospect or two, here’s what we’re looking at:

- Bedard’s arrival gives Seattle a legitimate ace in front of another potential No. 1 in Felix Hernandez, Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista. Horacio Ramirez gets knocked out of the mix. If there are no takers in trade talks, he could be released in spring training before his $2.75 million salary becomes fully guaranteed.

- The Orioles would be left with a rotation of Jeremy Guthrie, Daniel Cabrera, Adam Loewen and two of Matt Albers, Garrett Olson, Troy Patton and Hayden Penn. Brian Burres could also be put back into the mix, though the current plan in to use him as a reliever. They’d probably look to add a Tony Armas Jr.-type for some veteran insurance. Tillman isn’t likely to help them this year.

- Sherrill should become Baltimore’s closer. Yeah, he’s been a lefty specialist in Seattle, but he’d be just fine in an enhanced role. He’s not Brian Fuentes, but he’s adequate enough against righties to get the job done. However, there’s a good chance he’ll be traded again at some point.

- Jones starts in center field for the Orioles, giving the team a lineup something like:

2B Brian Roberts
3B Melvin Mora
RF Nick Markakis
1B Kevin Millar
DH Aubrey Huff
C Ramon Hernandez
LF Luke Scott
CF Adam Jones
SS Luis Hernandez

- However, Roberts is probably going to follow Bedard out the door, likely in a deal with the Cubs. Such a move could bring over Ronny Cedeno to start over Hernandez at shortstop. Freddie Bynum might then be the favorite to play second.

- I already had Bedard third overall behind Johan Santana and Jake Peavy among SPs, so his position won’t change. However, he will be worth an extra couple of bucks in AL-only leagues playing for a better team in a superior park for pitchers.

- Jones’ value would also increase slightly. He’s stuck at the bottom of Seattle’s lineup, but he could potentially hit first or second for Baltimore. If he’s that high in the order during spring training, he’d be a better sleeper in mixed leagues.
