Thoughts on Young for Garza
The offseason of surprises continues. There were rumors of Young for Garza before the deal got done, but I didn’t think it was really going to happen, something I stated twice on the site. In that way, it reminds me of the Hafner-for-Einar Diaz and Kazmir-for-Zambrano trades. I bashed both rumors as unrealistic, yet the reporters were right all along and the deals got done.
The difference here is that this actually looks like a pretty good trade. The difference in value between Young and Garza is balanced by Tampa Bay’s pickup of Bartlett to man shortstop. I don’t think Rincon has much left, and the Twins are probably better off without his salary. Harris is a decent enough option at second or third while cheap. I don’t think Pridie is going to be more than a reserve in the majors, but he did take quite a step forward last season. At the very least, he’s a better fallback than Denard Span should anything happen to the Twins’ regular center fielder.
Center field remains a question mark for Minnesota after this. Delmon is a short-term option there, but he’s more valuable in a corner. I imagine they still like the idea of Hughes/Cabrera from the Yankees or Ellsbury/Lester from the Red Sox in a Santana trade. The Mets don’t match up as well now, since they would have had to throw back two outfielders from the Milledge-Gomez-Martinez group. The Twins could still use one of them, but the Mets don’t have the pitching tot go along with it.
If the season started tomorrow, here’s how I imagine the lineups would shake down.
Rays
SS Jason Bartlett
LF Carl Crawford
1B Carlos Pena
CF B.J. Upton
RF Rocco Baldelli
2B Akinori Iwamura
3B Evan Longoria
DH Jonny Gomes/Elijah Dukes
C Dioner Navarro
Iwamura first and Bartlett seventh would also be a possibility. Or maybe they could bat both at the top and drop Crawford and Pena down a spot apiece.
Twins
DH Jason Kubel
2B Brendan Harris
C Joe Mauer
RF Michael Cuddyer
1B Justin Morneau
LF Delmon Young
3B Brian Buscher
SS Nick Punto
CF Jason Tyner
Craig Monroe looks like a strong candidate to be non-tendered now, though the Twins will still want someone to pair with Kubel against lefties (Jon Knott would be OK). They’ll also likely go in different directions at third base and in center field. If Alexi Casilla steps up in spring training, they could use him at second and put Harris at third.

Comments
Wouldn't it make more sense to go with:
1.Kubel
2.Mauer
3.Cuddyer or Young
4.Morneau
5.Young or Cuddyer
etc...?
