Thoughs on Jones for Infante
We're just two weeks into the offseason and the Tigers have already filled the two holes in their lineup, picking up Edgar Renteria from the Braves and Jacque Jones from the Cubs. They could arrange their hitters:
CF Curtis Granderson
2B Placido Polanco
DH Gary Sheffield
RF Magglio Ordonez
1B Carlos Guillen
SS Edgar Renteria
LF Jacque Jones/Marcus Thames
C Ivan Rodriguez
3B Brandon Inge
I think it might make more sense to drop Granderson to the third spot, though it wouldn't work out as well if Renteria struggles in AL at all like he did in 2005.

1B Carlos Guillen

If Sheffield proves he's all the way back from shoulder surgery, he can be moved back up. In the meantime, dropping him in the order might motivate him.
The Cubs are still well from complete, and acquiring Omar Infante for Jones settles nothing. I still have some faith in Infante. He hit 16 homers in the majors as a 22-year-old, and he still plays a pretty good second base, though he's not the option at shortstop he once was.
If the season started tomorrow, the Cubs would run out a lineup of:
LF Alfonso Soriano
SS Ryan Theriot
1B Derrek Lee
3B Aramis Ramirez
2B Mark DeRosa
RF Matt Murton
CF Felix Pie/Omar Infante
C Geovany Soto
Getting another left-handed hitter is a must, and they'll want more than another Jones-type player. Kosuke Fukudome would seem to be their best bet. If they sign Kaz Matsui, probably with the idea of using DeRosa at shortstop, Theriot would become a utilityman and Infante could be moved for a second time this winter. Ronny Cedeno is also a possibility to be traded.
I'm fine with going forward with Pie in center field and then giving Eric Patterson a chance if it doesn't work out. It's obvious now that they don't see Patterson as a legitimate option at second. Going cheap in center should leave them with enough money to pick up Fukudome or to go get Miguel Tejada from the Orioles.
