Brian Bass - RHP Twins - Ex-Kansas City prospect went 7-3 with a 3.48 ERA, 96 H and 80/24 K/BB in 103 1/3 IP while splitting time between the rotation and the pen for Triple-A Rochester. Currently 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA in seven starts in the Venezuelan Winter League. Bass has a below average fastball, but his changeup prevents him from being totally helpless against lefties. He might be middle-relief material.
Brooks Conrad - INF Astros - Slipped from .267/.334/.534 to .218/.305/.420 in Triple-A last season, causing the Astros to drop him from their 40-man roster. Still offers rare power for a utility guy. Unfortunately, he’s below average defensively at both second and third and he should never be asked to play shortstop.
Zach Day - RHP Royals - Got hurt again after posting a 3.93 ERA in nine starts and two relief appearances for Triple-A Omaha. Now that he’s going to be two years removed from shoulder surgery, he might surprise and reemerge as a fourth or fifth starter. Career 2.25 GB/FB ratio in 60 starts and 26 relief appearances as a major leaguer.
R.A. Dickey - RHP Brewers - Former conventional pitcher, Dickey went 13-6 with a 3.72 ERA in the PCL last season while mostly using his knuckler. The pitch doesn’t dance nearly as much as Tim Wakefield’s, but it might be good enough for him to survive as a fifth starter.
Roberto Giron - RHP Royals - 92/30 K/BB ratio, .193 average against in 85 IP for Triple-A Omaha. A flyball pitcher with an average fastball, he’d give up a lot of homers in the majors. The 31-year-old has been kicking around since 1993, so it’d be a nice story if he got a shot.
Ken Harvey - 1B/DH Twins - Injuries have limited him to 35 at-bats over the last two years. If he doesn’t get healthy next year, it might be the end for his chances of putting together a career as a part-time player.
Vince Perkins - RHP Brewers - Struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery, giving up 48 earned runs in 54 2/3 innings. However, he had a GB/FB ratio of 2.5:1 in the process. I’m not sure if his velocity is all the way back, but he showed very good stuff while in the Jays system. He could surface as a reliever someday.
Matt Riley - LHP Dodgers - Three Tommy John surgeries and still kicking. Riley finished last season with an 83/49 K/BB ratio in 69 1/3 innings, most of them coming in Triple-A. He’s fanned 17 while allowing four hits and nine walks in 12 1/3 innings in Mexico this fall. If his command ever comes back, the stuff is still there for him to help a team.
Jonathon Rouwenhorst - LHP Angels - 28-year-old southpaw with a funky delivery. Had a 4.96 ERA as a starter for Salt Lake last season, but I’ve always liked him as a reliever. Lefties hit .211 with one homer and eight walks against him.
