Minor League Free Agents (2)
Rick Asadoorian - RHP Reds - 1999 first-round pick as an outfielder. 67 strikeouts, 57 hits allowed in 70 2/3 innings since he first saw action on the mound in 2006. He has the arm strength, so with better secondary stuff, he could someday reach the majors.
Jason Bourgeois - INF-OF White Sox - Former Rangers prospect hit .311/.369/.444 with 23 steals for Triple-A Charlotte. That he’s capable of playing second base and the outfield gives him a chance of making it as a bench player. He’s only turning 26 in January.
Bobby Brownlie - RHP Indians - Signed out of an indy league, Brownlie, a former first-round pick of the Cubs, had a 3.17 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in eight starts and one relief appearance for Double-A Akron. He’ll never have the stuff he did before arm troubles, but he’s throwing better now than he has in a few years.
Ron Chiavaccci - RHP Tigers - Long-time Expos minor leaguer was one of the IL’s best in 2007, going 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA and a 126/43 K/BB ratio in 151 1/3 innings. He’s 30 and he has a below average fastball, but he’s decent enough against left-handers that he could be of some use as a middle man.
Keith Ginter - 2B-3B Indians - It’s not looking good for a player who seemed set to have a nice career as a utilityman. Hit just .247/.364/.415 for Triple-A Buffalo last season.
Valentino Pascucci - OF Marlins - Back from Japan, Val hit .284/.389/.577 with 34 homers in 447 at-bats in Triple-A last year. Too bad it was at Albuquerque. Since he doesn’t have much defensive value, it’d be hard to justify carrying him as a lefty killer.
Elizardo Ramirez - RHP Reds - 158 major league innings under his belt and only turning 25 in January. Ramirez has always had below average stuff, but he’s still usually managed to hold his own against older competition. I can’t imagine there are many teams that wouldn’t want him in their Triple-A rotation to begin the year.
Scott Seabol - OF Marlins - .300/.366/.577 with 32 homers as Pascucci’s teammate. .369/.424/.754 in 130 AB versus lefties. At 32, it might be too late for him to make it as a reserve. Worse third basemen have logged significant time in the majors over the last five years.
Andres Torres - OF Tigers - Back in the Tigers’ system, Torres hit .292/.363/.484 with 22 steals between Double- and Triple-A last season. Currently at .349/.417/.651 in 86 at-bats in Venezuela. He’s a switch-hitter and he’s always been able to motor in center field, so it’d be worth giving him a look as a reserve.
Ryan Wing - LHP White Sox - 2001 second-round pick failed to develop as a starter due to shoulder troubles. 1.39 ERA in 32 innings as a reliever for Double-A Birmingham. He allowed 89 hits and posted a 93/46 K/BB ratio in 114 IP overall. Lefties hit .213 with no homers off him. He doesn’t throw as hard as he used to, but he could still contribute out of the pen.
