Japanese Free-Agent Profiles (4)
Here's the final batch of profiles on Japanese free agents.
Kazuo Fukumori - RHP - 31-year-old closer finished with ERAs of 3.57, 2.17 and 4.75 the last three years. 124/68 K/BB ratio in 157 IP over the three seasons. Missed time in 2007 with elbow issues. Japan Baseball Daily says the Rays are interested. Poor command of stuff that rates little better than average would seem to put him in worse position to succeed in the majors than some other Japanese relievers.
Nobuhiko Matsunaka - 1B - 2004 Pacific League Triple Crown winner is coming off his worst season, finishing at .266/.366/.432 in 440 AB. A two-time 40-homer guy, he’s totaled just 34 bombs in 887 at-bats the last two seasons. A natural first baseman seemingly past his prime at 33 (soon to be 34), it’s doubtful that there would be much interest in him.
Fumiya Nishiguchi - RHP - Nishiguchi has actually pitched in the U.S. before, throwing 38 innings for the independent Sioux City Explorers in 1995. He’s since won 151 games in Japan, though he’s coming off one of his weaker years. In 2007, he went 9-11 with a 4.28 ERA, 149 H and 103/44 K/BB in 153 2/3 IP. He probably would have been an effective middle-of-the-rotation starter in MLB during his prime. At age 35, he’ll likely choose to stay in Japan.
Hisashi Ogura - RHP - Still effective when healthy, Ogura, 37, had a 2.18 while issuing just three unintentional walks in 62 innings in 2006. The problem is that he was limited to 17 1/3 innings in 2005 and 29 2/3 innings last season. Because of his age, he seems like a long shot to come over.
Kazuhiro Wada - OF - Former superstar hit .310/.370/.473 as a 35-year-old in 2007. Homer total has dropped from 33 in 2002 to 19 and 18 the last two seasons. Slugged over .600 three years running in 2002-04. It would have been interesting to see him in the U.S. during his prime, but he probably doesn’t have a lot to offer a club now.
