Draft Day Rumors
There are a lot of rumors going around Montreal as the NHL has its Entry Draft today. One rumor has the Boston Bruins offering Phil Kessel to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Tomas Kaberle and the seventh overall pick in the draft.
I can't see the Maple Leafs doing this as the player they get at seven will certainly be the equivalent of Kessel in a few years, if not sooner, and they wouldn't have to give up Kaberle, who will fetch something good in the next few weeks.
Vincent Lecavalier is also being rumored to be traded as this must happen before July 1, otherwise his no-trade contract takes effect. I think that the Canadiens are the likeliest candidates, especially today, as they want to make a big splash in front of their hometown fans. The Lightning need to pare salary and Lecavalier is the team's highest paid player.
Apparently there have been no offers for Dany Heatley, who has requested for the second time in his career to be traded. Heatley is only 28, and I would be very wary about trading for him because of his attitude. He signed a long-term contract last season that included a no-trade, no-movement clause. He is still owed $30 million over the next four years and that is a lot of money with a certain reduction in the salary cap in two years. Heatley may be stuck in Ottawa with a coach he does not like.
The draft will still be the most interesting and exciting part of the night. Whereas, in every other year (and every other North American sport) you know who is being picked first overall, the New York Islanders are not revealing who they will take among John Tavares, Victor Hedman and Matt Duchene. I think it will be Hedman and that will throw the rest of the draft off as the Lightning really need a defenseman and may be willing to move down in the draft to grab Jared Cowan, Dmitri Kulikov or Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Have fun tonight and enjoy the draft.
