Detroit-Pittsburgh Game 7 Live Blog

The seventh game of the Stanley Cup. Is there anything better than that!!!

A couple of facts before the game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have never lost the seventh game of any series as they are 4-0 lifetime. They beat the Capitals earlier in round 2 in Game 7 at Washington 6-2. The last road team to win a Game 7 in a final in any sport was the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. Is this a coincedence.

This is the 87th game of the playoffs this year. Sidney Crosby is number 87. Is this an omen of things to come?

Either Chris Osgood or Evgeni Malkin should be named winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy depending on who wins tonight.

Petr Sykora is out for the Penguins and Miroslav Satan is back in.

The lineups will be the same for both teams as in Game 6 with the exception of Sykora/Satan.

Back after the first. Enjoy.

Here are the starting lineups:

PITTSBURGH

Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Dupuis-Adams-Satan

Gonchar-Orpik
Gill-Scuderi
Eaton-Letang

DETROIT

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary
Franzen-Filppula-Hossa
Holmstrom-Helm-Samuelsson
Hudler-Draper-Maltby

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Ericsson-Lebda

Osgood is in net for Detroit and Marc-Andre Fleury for the Penguins.

DETROIT 0 PITTSBURGH 0 after the first period.

Pretty good first period. Pittsburgh outshot the Red Wings 10-6 but Fleury managed to make one great save off of Kirk Maltby late in the first.

Detroit seemed to have the momentum in the first until Brad Stuart took a slashing penalty breaking Evgeni Malkin's stick at the 11:24 mark. Pittsburgh took over the play after that as they buzzed around Chris Osgood. But Osgood was kept the Penguins off the scoreboard.

The Staal-Kennedy-Cooke line has been the most effective for the Penguins thus far, just as in Game 6. Kennedy and Staal are the only two players in the game with two shots on goal.

Kronwall leads all players in TOI with 7:26 while Sergei Gonchar tops the Pens with 7:26. Lidstrom is the only other player over seven minutes at 7:01.

I can't believe that IPittsburgh coach Dan Blysma isn't playing Crosby and Malkin more. Crosby has played 6:43 while Malkin has played only 6:16. The duo should be averaging at least eight minutes a period and probably more in the final game of the season.

Detroit won 11 of 14 face offs in the first.

It is great to see boxing legend Muhammad Ali at the game in a Red Wings sweater. Back after the second.

Pittsburgh has opened the scoring at the 1:13 mark with Maxime Talbot gettting his seventh of the playoffs. Detroit's Brad Stuart tried to pass the puck up, but Malkin got a stick on it, deflecting it to Talbot who put it through the legs of Chris Osgood.

Sidney Crosby has left the game early in the second after a knee-on-knee hit from Johan Franzen. No word yet on his condition.

Maxime Talbot has made it 2-0 just past the halfway mark of the game as he sniped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Osgood into the top corner. Brad Stuart is the goat of the game thus far as he was caught pinching in the Pittsburgh end, allowing Talbot to go in on a two-on-one.

PITTSBURGH 2 DETROIT 0 after the second.

Detroit outshot the Penguins 11-7 in the second and the two teams are tied at 17.

Detroit is 23-13 in the face off circle, but the Penguins have actually won 8 of the last 11.

Lidstrom continues to lead the Red Wings in TOI with 17:36 while Gonchar is on top with Pittsburgh at 16:14.

The Red Wings are starting to press the play and if they do not score early in the third, look for the Penguins to get a lot of odd-man rushes.

Sidney Crosby has come back for the third period but is just sitting at the end of the bench. He made his first appearance on the ice at the 9:27 mark of the third.

The Red Wings have only four shots on goal 11 minutes into the period as the Penguins are checking them into the ice.

Jonathan Ericsson has made it a one goal game as his shot from the point beat Fleury with 6:07 left in the third stanza. The Penguins have yet to put a shot on goal.

FINAL

PITTSBURGH 2 DETROIT 1

The Penguins have wn the Stanley Cup!!!!

Marc-Andre Fleury made a great save with a couple of seconds left to preserve the victory.

After all the flak that Fleury has taken throughout his career, no-one can ever say again that he can't win the big one.

It could be awkward for Marian Hossa to be shaking hands with his former Pittsburgh teammates as he rebuffed the Penguins in the off-season to sign with Detroit as he wanted a shot at winning the Cup.

Detroit outshot the Penguins 7-1 in the third and 24-18 in the game.

Crosby only played one shift in the third.

Lidstrom played 27:44 minutes to lead both teams. Gonchar played 24:18.

Detroit led in face off wins with 33 to Pittsburgh's 14 but the Penguins are the Stanley Cup champions becoming the first NHL team since the 1971 Montreal Canadiens to win a Game 7 on the road and the first team in the big four to do so since the Pittsburgh Pirates did so in 1979.
