Detroit-Pittsburgh Game 6 - Live Update
The Stanley Cup will be awarded tonight IF the Detroit Red Wings are triumphant over the hometown Pittsburgh Penguins.
Dan Cleary will be in the Detroit lineup after missing practice on Monday so the Red Wings will go with the same lineup as Saturday.
Petr Sykora will be a game-time decision for the Penguins after missing the past 14 games as a healthy scratch.
If you believe in omens, the Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux first overall 25 years ago today. It was the best thing that ever happened to the franchise.
Back after the first.
Here are the starting lineups:
PITTSBURGH
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Dupuis-Adams-Sykora
Gonchar-Orpik
Gill-Scuderi
Eaton-Letang
DETROIT
Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary
Franzen-Filppula-Hossa
Holmstrom-Helm-Samuelsson
Hudler-Draper-Maltby
Lidstrom-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Ericsson-Lebda
DETROIT 0 PITTSBURGH 0 after the first period.
Petr Sykora replaced Miroslav Satan in the Pittsburgh lineup.
The Penguins outshot Detroit 12-3 but Marc-Andre Fleury was forced to make an unbelievable save on a point-blank shot from Henrik Zetterberg, just over three minutes into the game.
The Penguins carried the play throughout most of the first.
Billy Guerin led all players with five shots on goal, more than all the Detroit players had in the first.
Niklas Kronwall led everyone in TOI with 8:48 while Sergei Gonchar led the Pens with 8:13.
Detroit took the only two penalties in the period but obviously the Penguins could not beat Chris Osgood.
Back after the second.
PITTSBURGH 1 DETROIT 0 after the second.
Jordan Staal scored the only goal of the second, as Tyler Kennedy and Rob Scuderi added assists.
The shots on goal in the second were 12-9 for Pittsburgh, who are up 24-12 after two.
Chris Osgood has been "Os"-some in net as he is keeping the Red Wings in the game. Should Detroit win the Cup, he should be the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the MVP in the playoffs.
Guerin had one shot on net in the second stanza, giving him six for the game.
Niklas Kronwall and Brad Stuart are the only two players over 16 minutes after two.
FINAL
PITTSBURGH 2 DETROIT 1
Tyler Kennedy put the Penguins up 2-0 when he came from behind the net to put it past Osgood.
Kris Draper with his first goal in the post-season beat Fleury with a wrist shot to cut the Penguins lead in half at the 8:01 mark of the third.
Marc-Andre Fleury rebounded nicely from being pulled in Game 5 and shot down the Wings. He made a great save on a breakaway from Dan Cleary with 1:42 to go.
The Red Wings outshot Pittsburgh 14-7 in the third but the Pens outshot them overall in the game 31-26. Fleury did however have a lot more difficult saves.
Lidstrom played a lot in the third (10:28) to finish the game at 24:0, just behind Kronwall.
Cleary, Kennedy and Guerin ended the game with six shots on goal.
Game 7 will be Friday in Detroit. If I were Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma, I would play Crosby and Malkin close to 30 minutes in regulation. They have all summer to recover.
