Trade Deadline 2009 Blog
I'll be blogging all the big news here throughout the trade deadline, while you can head to our player news for all the latest.
4:28 PM ET Well it is almost 90 minutes past the trade deadline and there is one more deal that has been announced.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers and Olaf Kolzig, along with a fourth round selection from Tampa Bay, for 26 year old minor league defenseman Richard Petiot.
Good move by the Maple Leafs as it appears that they will pay off the contract of Kolzig and give up Heward and former first round pick Rogers, who has had a lot of injury problems, for a minor league defenseman. Aah. It must be nice to have money.
Ales Kotalik has gone to Edmonton for a second round pick, so essentially the Sabres traded Kotalik for Dominic Moore (see earlier today) and a swap of second round picks.
4:17 PM ET: Toronto GM Brian Burke said that Tomas Kaberle will be out a maximum of two weeks. The hand injury suffered on Tuesday is not serious.
4:01 PM ET: Looks like it's a four-way deal with Patrick O'Sullivan going to Edmonton, Erik Cole headed back to Carolina and Justin Williams to the Kings.
Chris Neil did not get traded.
3:51 PM ET: This just in. The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Patrick O'Sullivan from the Los Angeles Kings. No word yet on what is coming back, but the 'Canes have a player with a lot of potential upside.
3:46 PM ET: The Sharks must have needed the cap room with the McLaren trade as they have acquired Travis Moen and Kent Huskins from the Anaheim Ducks. The Sharks have just improved their depth as they make a run for the Stanley Cup.
The Flames have dealt minor league goaltender Kevin Lalande to Columbus for a fourth round pick. Lalande gives the Blue Jackets some minor league goaltending depth.
3:41 PM ET: A few more deals have been announced in the last few minutes. Steve Eminger is headed across the state as the Tampa Bay Lightning have trade him to the Florida Panthers for Noah Welch and a third round pick. Eminger will try to re-capture his potential as he will play under his former junior coach Peter DeBoer.
The Ducks have traded Samuel Pahlsson, who is currently out of action with mononucleosis, to Chicago for defenseman James Wisniewski, a draft pick and a prospect. Good trade for both teams, but the Blackhawks make out great as Pahlsson is a great third center who can shut down the opposing team's top center. While his fantasy value is low, his hockey value is high.
The Flyers have acquired defenseman Kyle McLaren from the Sharks for a sixth round pick. Nice move for Philly as they get a solid blueliner, although he does have limited fantasy value.
3:10 PM ET: With the trade deadline gone, the trades are starting to come in. Dominic Moore has been traded to the Buffalo Sabres for a second round pick. A great move by the Sabres who pick up a great third line center and will help them in their playoff quest. Moore won't score as much with the Sabres as he did with the Leafs as the Sabres have far more offensive depth than Toronto.
There is talk that the Chris Neil deal did not go down. More to follow.
3:03 PM ET: The Rangers have given the Coyotes Nigel Dawes, Petr Prucha and Dmitri Kalinin to Phoenix. This will definitely get the Rangers under the cap. The Coyotes grab some players who have limited upside, although Prucha did score 30 goals as a rookie in 2005-06.
2:58 PM ET: The Rangers have acquired Derek Morris from the Phoenix Coyotes. No word yet on who is coming back, but the Rangers get another veteran defenseman with little fantasy value , but will help on the blueline.
2:45 PM ET: Big fantasy trade as the NHL's penalty minute leader, Daniel Carcillo, been traded from Phoenix to Philadelphia for Scottie Upshall and a second round pick. Carcillo will need to show his new teammates that he can fight so look for lots of minutes from Carcillo the rest of the way.
Upshall has a lot of upside but he's been a promising player for a few years now, and maybe he needs to play under coach Wayne Gretzky to fulfill his promise.
The Maple Leafs have traded Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers. The Maple Leafs will receive a second round pick and a conditional pick. Good move by the Rangers who need a big winger who can score.
2:41 PM ET: Just a note. A trade has to be submitted to the NHL by 3:00 PM ET. Trades sometimes aren't announced for at least another hour after that to the public. We'll stay until the last deal.
2:33 PM ET: Chris Neil has been traded to the Florida Panthers according to RDS television. No word on who is coming back to Ottawa, but Neil will be very familiar with GM Jacques Martin as Martin coached him in Ottawa years ago. Good pick up for the Panthers who get a feisty winger who isn't afraid to go into the corners or stand in front of the net. Neil gets a lot of penalty minutes and can score so his value, which had stagnated in Ottawa, should increase in Florida.
2:01 PM ET: With less than an hour to go, Bill Guerin has been traded from the Islanders to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh doesn't give up much if they miss the playoffs as the Islanders would receive a fifth round pick, and only a third rounder if they do, but with Guerin and Chris Kunitz, who the Penguins got in a weekend deal with Anaheim, they have significantly upgraded their top two lines with the acquisitions. If they make the playoffs, the Penguins will have the talent to go far in the post-season.
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have the talent to lead the Penguins deep into the playoffs and a healthy Sergei Gonchar will help the blueline. The Penguins have definitely upgraded their team.
1:30 PM ET: The Bruins have acquired Mark Recchi from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Recchi turned 41-years-old a month ago, but the veteran still has fantasy value as he has 45 points this season in 62 games. He is minus-15 this season, but that will definitely improve with the first place Bruins. The Bruins also get a second round pick and the Lightning receive Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums from the Bruins. Good future trade for the Lightning who get a couple of youngsters with upside.
1:07 PM ET: The Sabres received Mikael Tellqvist from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for a fourth round pick. It is a good move for the Sabres who have Ryan Miller on the shelf with a wonky ankle. It is unknown at this time if Miller will be able to return at any stage of the season, so Tellqvist could get a lot of starts and have Patrick Lalime back him up. Tellqvist is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season so the Sabres have no financial obligation except for the next five-plus weeks. The Maple Leafs picked up Martin Gerber off waivers and he will replace Vesa Toskala who will go on the injured reserve list with groin problems. He will have surgery and be ready for the start of next season. Gerber is also at the end of a contract, so the Maple Leafs have no financial obligation beyond this season as well.
12:40 PM ET: Less than two-and-a-half hours to go and the first big trade as the Coyotes have traded Olli Jokinen to Calgary for Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust and the Flames first round pick. Great deal for both teams as this year's Entry Draft is very deep, and the Flames get a big first line center in Jokinen. If Langkow stays on the top line when he returns, then Jokinen becomes possibly the best second line center in the NHL. While Jokinen struggled in Phoenix, going to Calgary will allow him to play in the post-season for the first time in his career. Jokinen's fantasy value will go up in Calgary as will Lombardi in Phoenix as he will definitely be a top-six forward in the desert after being shuffled up and down the depth charts in Calgary.
11:47 AM ET: A couple of small deals have been announced. Calgary gets Jordan Leopold back from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Lawrence Nycholat, an unknown prospect and a draft pick. Leopold was traded to Colorado during the 2006 off-season for Alex Tanguay, but failed to produce in Denver. He should be the fourth defenseman in Calgary and replace the injured Mark Giordano. He will see second power play duty as Dion Phaneuf and Adrian Aucoin are ahead of him on the blueline. His fantasy value will be higher on Calgary as he will have offensive players like Jarome Iginla, Michael Cammalleri and Daymond Langkow to play alongside. Also Pittsburgh and St. Louis made a very minor deal. It's still pretty quiet in the NHL.
10:53 AM ET: All quiet for now. Leaf GM Brian Burke said on TSN that Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore will be traded by the deadline.
9:59 AM ET: The first trade has been announced. Ottawa finally gets the goalie they need as they have acquired the injured Pascal Leclaire from Columbus, for forward Antoine Vermette. Leclaire had an outstanding season last year with a .919 save percentage and a goals-against-average of 2.25 in addition to nine shutouts. He only played 12 games this season before undergoing ankle surgery, but he will be 100 percent for the start of training camp. The Blue Jackets get a top six forward that they really need and this could be the extra push they need in getting to the playoffs for the first time in their history. Vermette's fantasy value skyrockets as he will see first power play time, something he wasn't getting in Ottawa as he was behind Alfredsson, Spezza and Heatley on the depth chart.
Filip Kuba is off the trade market as he signed a three-year deal with Ottawa this morning.
8:55 AM ET: Well I've been up since 6:00 AM and have this update. It looks like Chris Pronger has been taken off the trade market. Tomas Kaberle re-injured his hand last night and could be out for the rest of the season. That gets rid of two of the top defensemen mentioned prominently in trade talks. It should increase the trade value of Jay Bouwmeester, if the Florida Panthers decide to trade him, John-Michael Liles and Derek Morris. It could be interesting if the Ducks put Scott Niedermayer back into play, although they said on Monday that he wasn't available.
The Blackhawks and Wild are looking to tweak their lineup at best. The Blackhawks are looking for a second or third line center and possibly a veteran defenseman, while the Wild will not give up anything of significance since they re-signed goalie Niklas Backstrom to a four-year deal worth $24 million yesterday.
Mark Recchi, Nik Antropov, Dominic Moore and Derek Morris were healthy scratches last night while Bill Guerin was a healthy scratch on Monday, so it looks like all five are going to be traded as their respective teams did not want to risk any injury and put a halt to a deal.

Mostly that’ s because most people don’ t realize how many skills they do have. If you have office skills, for example, you may be able to find work as a virtual assistant. If you have transportation you might try mystery shopping , although it can.
