Comrie & Campoli traded to Ottawa
The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Chris Campoli and center Mike Comrie to the Ottawa Senators for Dean MacAmmond and San Jose's first round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.
It's a great trade for the Islanders who get an extra first round pick in a very deep draft. MacAmmond has not played well this season for the Senators (who really has?), and he had asked to be traded after being a healthy scratch earlier this month, but the trade was all about the draft choice for the Islanders.
The Senators have really been lacking a defenseman who can move the puck, as they had lost Wade Redden, Zdeno Chara and Joe Corvo through trades or free agency since the end of the 2005-06 season. Campoli will give them the quarterback on the power play that they so desparately need.
In addition, Mike Comrie, a former Senator, will give Ottawa some secondary scoring that they have needed as Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza have scored 65 of the Senators 141 goals this season. Outside of the trio, only Nick Foligno has scored in double figures and Foligno just reached the 10 goal mark.
As a sidenote, the San Jose first round pick was originally acquired by Tampa Bay in the Dan Boyle deal and then the Lightning traded it to Ottawa in exchange for Andrej Mezsaros and now it goes to the Islanders.
