The Rookies of the 2008 Entry Draft
A common misconception for poolies is the ten game threshold for rookies to decide whether or not they should remain in the NHL or be sent back to junior hockey.
There were many players kept this season by NHL teams who still had junior eligibility left and all you read about in the newspapers were the ten game mark. Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty, Luke Schenn and Osar Moller have all passed the mark and will now collect their full NHL salary the rest of the year.
But this has absolutely nothing to do as to whether or not they can be sent back to junior. Any of them can be sent back at any time. As I said earlier, it is only money.
Some of these players could be loaned to their country for the Junior Worlds at Christmas, especially if they are not seeing a lot of ice time.
The next barrier, if they stay, is the 40-game mark as according to the CBA, this milestone is considered when calculating a full season towards unrestricted free agency.
But the main thing to know is that for poolies, the player is not necessarily staying the whole season with the big club. This knowledge will come in handy as Mikkel Boedker, Zach Bogosian and Alex Pietrangelo get close to the ten game mark. It is a nice milestone, but owning these players past ten games should not allow you to breathe any easier for the rest of the season.
