Robert Lang goes to Montreal
The Montreal Canadiens needed a center and couldn't wait for Mats Sundin to make a decision on whether or not he would, first decide to play this season, and second, play for the Habs, so they went out and traded for 37-year-old Robert Lang.
The Blackhawks needed to trade someone as they were over the salary cap and Lang's $4 million contract was shipped to Montreal for a second round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.
This is good fantasy news for Lang owners as he will continue to be a top-six forward in the NHL, and could play on the top line with Alexei Kovalev. Lang had the best season of his career playing on the same line with Kovalev in Pittsburgh in the 2000-01 season. Lang managed 32 goals and 80 points while Kovalev managed the best season of his career as well, with 44 goals and 95 points. Of course, this was the year that Mario Lemieux came back in December and he garnered 35 goals and 76 points in only 43 games. But nevertheless, the Lang-Kovalev duo should add value to both fantasy players. I thought that Kovalev could drop 15-20 points from last season's 35 goal, 84 point season, but now he could come close to last year's mark.
This move also means that Montreal is no longer interested in Sundin. It remains to be seen if Sundin will hit the ice at all this season in the NHL.
