The Stanley Cup - Game 1 (In Game Coverage)

The NHL could not be happier with its Stanley Cup match up of Pittsburgh and Detroit. The youth of the Penguins against the veteran Red Wings. These are the two best teams in the NHL.

Pittsburgh is 10-0 when scoring first, while the Red Wings are 10-1. The first goal looks to be very important.

Marc-Andre Fleury tripped and fell coming on to the ice before the start of the game. Hopefully this is not an omen for the Penguins.

Back after the first.

Pittsburgh 0 Detroit after one.

A great first period despite the lack of a goal as there were lots of chances and lots of hitting.

Detroit did score on a shot from Nicklas Lidstrom after a beautiful feed from Pavel Datsyuk, but the goal was waved off as Tomas Holmstrom was deemed to have interferred with Pens' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and he was sent to the box.

Fleury shook off his pre-game jitters and was outstanding in stopping all 11 Detroit shots, but Osgood was even better, stopping 12 Pittsburgh shots. Osgood made a number of outstanding saves as the Red Wings managed four trips to the penalty box, while Pittsburgh only were sent off twice.

Niklas Kronwall continued his awesome playoffs. He leads all defensemen in scoring with 12 assists, but is really getting to the opposition with his big hits as Ryan Malone can attest to tonight.

Sergei Gonchar made a nice play on Zetterberg while the Penguins were on a power play. Zetterberg had a break, but Gonchar kept him on the outside and eventually forced him to give up the puck without getting a shot on net. Gonchar has really improved this season defensively.

Detroit was 17-of-27 on faceoffs, with Zetterberg going 6-3 and Draper going 5-2. Crosby was 4-6, Malkin was 2-4 and Staal was a medicore 1-5 in the first.

Gonchar led all skaters with 10:22 minutes on the ice in the first. Hossa and Crosby were each on 7:48.

Lidstrom, Rafalski and Krownwall led the Red Wings in time on the ice as each played between 8:28 and 8:37 in the opening stanza.

Marian Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg each had three shots on goal.

Back after the second.

Another great period as Detroit leads Pittsburgh 1-0.

Mikael Samuelsson scored the only goal of the period as he went around the net and his wraparound bounced off Fleury into the net.

The Red Wings totally outplayed the Penguins in the second period, outshooting them 16-4.

The Penguins took the only three penalties of the period, but improved on faceoffs winning 10 of 19.

Filppula is a perfect 5-for-5 on the draw.

Gonchar still leads the Penguins in ice time with 18:34 minutes, while Lidstrom leads the Wings at 17:31.

One fact: No 40 year olds are playing tonight. Hasek is on the bench and Roberts and Chelios are both scratched.

Detroit makes it 2-0 early in the third as Samuelsson scored his second unassisted goal of the game. Malkin gave up the puck deep in the Pittsburgh zone and Samuelsson beat Fleury cleanly. Draper made a very nice play, separating Malkin and the puck. Draper didn't get an official assist on the goal but it was a big play.

Fleury is still keeping the Penguins in the game, but Detroit is really carrying the play.

Cleary makes it 3-0 with a shorthanded goal. Stuart shot the puck down the ice and Cleary outhustled Kris Letang and shot high over Fleury.

Zetterberg ends the scoring at 19:47 of the third with a power play goal.

The Red Wings took total control of the game after the first period, defeating the Penguins 4-0.

Fleury was strong throughout the game and only his effort kept the Penguins in until the Cleary goal.

The Red Wings outshot the Penguins 35-19 in the game and 8-3 in the third. Osgood was great when he had to be in the first, but didn't have a lot of work after that, facing a total of seven shots in the last two periods.

The Penguins made it close in faceoffs winning 31 of 66 in the game,

Game 2 is Monday night. See you then.
