Devils looking good to go to Cup finals

As the NHL heads down the home stretch, it is quite amazing at how susceptible the goaltending is in the Eastern Conference. The only teams in a playoff position at this time with solid goaltending is New Jersey (the great Martin Brodeur) and the New York Rangers (with Henrik Lundqvist), and the Rangers are no sure thing to make the post-season.

Every other team has at least one question mark. Montreal led the conference at the time of this writing and they have put all their eggs in one basket as the Habs are relying on a 21-year-old rookie in Carey Price. Now Price may be the real deal, and I think he will be in the years to come, but it is an awful lot to expect much this season from Price. While he may conjure up memories of a young Patrick Roy who led Montreal to a Cup win in 1986 as a 21-year-old, there is only one goaltender in NHL history that has won a Cup at that age and it is Roy. Don't expect the same from Price.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a lot of talent up front, but again, their goaltending leaves a lot to be desired. They have relied on journeyman goaltender Ty Conklin this season with the injury to Marc-Andre Fleury. While Conklin has performed beyond anyone's wildest imagination, past history shows that Conklin will not be able to handle the job in the post-season. Fleury has been a disappointment thus far and hockey fans who remember his showing at the World Juniors in 2004 wonder if he is able to handle the pressure.

The Ottawa Senators have been in a free-fall since opening the season at 15-2, posting a 22-24-6 record since their hot start. The Senators did nothing at the trade deadline to improve their goaltending tandem of Martin Gerber and Ray Emery and while they lead the NHL in goals with 217, they are 22nd in goals against and cannot rely at this time on either netminder.

It looks like the best representative in the East will be the New Jersey Devils who have Martin Brodeur between the pipes. Brodeur has shown time and time again during his career that he can handle the pressure and at the present time he is still the top goaltender in the NHL.

Don't be surprised if New Jersey goes all the way to the Cup final. It would be a good idea to load up on Devils in your playoff pool, with Martin Brodeur being the reason why.

OK. Go ahead and stock up on Devils.

When the Habs and Pens meet to decide who goes to the Cup, remember this comment.

Gotta go woth the devils, not only the most solid in the pipes but depth is solid there as well.
