Week 12 eyebrow raisers
I can’t recall a season with so many concussions. Maybe it’s because 10 years ago, concussions weren’t a hot-button medical issue. Guys just played with them and there were no questions asked.
Now, every time a guy gets a little woozy he lands on the sideline. I’m happy that their brains won’t look like oatmeal in 2035, but it’s really taking over the league.
Anyway, let’s get to the men that popped the eyebrows.
Basically, this is a list of guys that I looked at their numbers and said “Really. Why?”
THE GOOD
Fred Jackson: 15 carries, 73 yards, 2 TD; five catches, 43 yards: Jackson took over as Buffalo’s featured runner and the Bills put up 31 points. Look for him to stay ahead of Marshawn Lynch.
Terrell Owens: 5 catches, 96 yards, 1 TD: It appears that I wrote him off too soon. Let’s see him do it one more time.
Justin Forsett: 22 carries, 130 yards, 2 TD: It would be really impressive, except for the fact it came against the Rams putrid rush defense.
Josh Freeman: 250 yards, 2 TD: This kid looks like he’s for real. Never would have thought he’d be able to do this in his rookie year.
Michael Jenkins: 7 catches, 80 yards: Finally was able to take advantage of all the double teams Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez see. We’ll throw it out as it was against the Bucs and he didn’t see Aqib Talib.
Larry Johnson: 22 carries, 107 yards: Wow. Bernard Scott was dealing with some turf toe and Johnson stepped in. And after the game, Ced Benson didn’t seem too pleased with the idea of possibly splitting carries. We didn’t know that was even an issue. Keep an eye on this.
Josh Morgan: 6 catches, 43 yards: It looks like the Niners are finally buying into the spread. Morgan is benefiting, especially with Isaac Bruce and Arnaz Battle inactive.
Kenny Britt: 7 catches, 128 yards 1 TD: He’s taking over as the No. 1 target. With Vince Young playing so well, Britt is a clear fantasy option.
THE BAD
Matt Hasselbeck: 102 yards, 0 TD: It was the Justin Forsett show and Hasselbeck suffered.
DeSean Jackson: 41 yards, 1 TD: It could have been a whole lot more if Jackson didn’t get a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit from London Fletcher.
Matt Ryan: 15 yards: It sounds like a turf toe injury. Tough break in such a great matchup.
Michael Turner: 33 yards: We thought the Falcons rushed him back too quickly, and it turns out they did. He was limping around before re-injuring the ankle. Big mistake.
Chad Ochocinco: 3 catches, 38 yards: Chalk it up as a fluky, disappointing day in a great matchup. The Bengals went run heavy.
Steve Smith: 1 catch, 5 yards: Darrelle Revis. Period.
Jerricho Cotchery: 1 catch, 12 yards: It was a tough matchup and the Jets attacked the Panthers in their weak spot – the front seven.
Larry Fitzgerald: 4 catches, 34 yards: Don’t underestimate how much quarterbacks influence even the greatest of receivers. Fitz needs Kurt.
Vincent Jackson: 2 catches, 27 yards: This is the third straight week he’s been on this list. Still not worried as he’s not being used any differently.
