Updating the Niners' spread
I don’t want to beat this shotgun-spread drum too hard, but it looks like the 49ers coaches are coming around.
Apparently, the Niners’ players went to the coaches and told them they want to run the spread more leading up to yesterday’s win over the Jaguars. Jimmy Raye and Mike Singletary listened.
They used the spread when the game was close for the first time all season. Before yesterday, the formation was only used in passing situations or when they were down a ton of points.
Yesterday, 41 of the Niners’ 61 offensive plays came out of the shotgun. They ran the shotgun-spread formation 34 times. And the team won, 20-3.
"I would say right now I think we have more playmakers in the passing game," Singletary said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. "We have a lot of playmakers we can throw the ball to. ... The best thing that happened this week is I saw leadership on the offensive side of the ball. 'Coach, this is what I think would work. Can we do more spread? Can we put it on us, the receivers?' Not that we're going to lose our minds and throw on every down. To me, that's leadership."
So Singletary is finally relenting on his power running game philosophy. Be aware.

Probably would have happened earlier, had Singletary not dropped his pants. Everyone there was too scared to show leadership in front of him, for fear of his pants.
