Week 5 Committee Report Highlights with Random Thoughts

In today’s live chat, someone asked me what fair market value is for Clinton Portis. I said a ham sandwich. Now that Chris Samuels is probably out for the season, I’m downgrading that to just two pieces of white bread. The meat portion of the meal is just too valuable.

Anyway, let’s get to three committees that caught our eye in Week 5.

Remember, for a full report on all 32 backfield situations from Evan Silva, check out the Season Pass.

CARDINALS
Beanie Wells: 7
Tim Hightower: 6

Keep in mind that Hightower had five catches while Wells had zero. As long as the Cardinals are going to be a pass-first team, Hightower is going to be the primary back. They’re still not comfortable with Wells in pass protection. That said, the coaches keep claiming that Wells is going to get more chances. People said it here, here and here. Keep Wells stashed until they follow through on their promise.

RAVENS:
Ray Rice: 14
LeRon McClain: 2
Willis McGahee: 1

It looks like Rice has finally shook McGahee off completely, but we’ll see. Derrick Mason had zero targets last week, and you know that’s a fluke. This article from the Baltimore Sun explains well what’s going on with the Ravens’ offense. Any way you slice it, Rice is an RB1 and should be caged in PPR leagues because he’s such a beast.

BROWNS:
Jamal Lewis: 31
Jerome Harrison: 8

Wow. Really? The Browns actually think Jamal Lewis gives them the best chance to win. I guess it’s hard to question their opinion considering I’m typing from my desk and they’re on the field coaching. I’m not dropping Harrison because a few more games like this and Harrison will have the feature back role again.

COMMITTEE REPORT QUICK HITTERS
Ronnie Brown and Larry Johnson have the exact same number of carries on the season (93). Guess which one has 217 more yards than the other. … Sammy Morris looks like he’ll be the primary back when the Pats want to run, but don’t trust him. The Pats will go with whatever back they think matchups up best. Could be Kevin Faulk this week. … The top three backs in the league in carries are Cedric Benson, Steven Jackson and Brandon Jacobs. … Four backs have more than 20 catches and more than 60 carries on the season: Joseph Addai, Ray Rice, Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Jackson.

RANDOM THOUGHTS
* Some buy lows I’m trying to get before this week’s games: Greg Jennings, Santonio Holmes, Brandon Jacobs. Jennings is going to benefit from the Packers squaring away their offensive line situation. Holmes’ wrist is 100 percent now. Jacobs’ lack of touchdowns is a fluke. His role isn’t changing just because Ahmad Bradshaw is playing well, as I mentioned in Thursday’s Dose.

* Had my first fantasy basketball draft last night. Can’t believe how high my guys like Anthony Randolph, Andrea Bargnani, Tyreke Evans and Yi Jianlian went. I missed out on all of them. Sigh.

* If you could pick one NCAA quarterback to take over your favorite NFL team, who would it be? I’m going Sam Bradford, but Jake Locker intrigues me. Those legs could be useful from a fantasy perspective as well.

* Final rant about Mike Sims-Walker. I would have preferred any excuse other than “I was with a woman” to explain why he missed curfew and was suspended. Not only can I not get women like Sims-Walker, but he has to cost me fantasy games because of it? Again, sigh.

You really think you can get TWO pieces of white bread? Maybe 2 pieces of some no-carb Multigrain, but white bread?
