Sports - Pancake Blocks: Early Waiver Wired Look

Now that my Monday nights and Tuesday mornings are booked solid, I've been trying to finish my research for Tuesday's "Waiver Wired" article by Monday afternoon. Here's an early look at Tuesday's column. If you're reading while watching the much ballyhooed Packers @ Vikes game, please feel free to offer your two cents.

FWIW, I'm leaning toward going with "Brown Sugar" over a Mendenhall theme because Rocket Rashard is already owned in two-thirds of all cbssports.com leagues.

Quarterbacks

1. Derek Anderson - Great Week 5 matchup @ BUF.
2. Seneca Wallace - Hasselbeck status up in the air, good matchup vs. JAX.
3. Shaun Hill- Owned in about 50%; could Crabtree talks increase upside?
4. Jake Delhomme - Owned in 37%; 220+ yards and at least 60% in each of last two games.
5. Vince Young - Deep leagues, starter by Week 8?

On the radar: Matt Leinart, Chad Henne, Josh Johnson, Daunte Culpepper, David Carr

Running Backs

1. Rashard Mendenhall - Obvious choice, but borderline candidate at 67% ownership.
2. Jerome Harrison - Owned in 44%, earned a major role going forward.
3. Michael Bush / Justin Fargas - Fargas led the team in carries after D-Mac's injury and Bush's fumble, but Fargas hasn't been a viable fantasy entity even when he was starting. Carry split plus NYG, PHI, NYJ on the docket next three weeks.
4. Ladell Betts - Portis owners need to protect themselves.
5. Bernard Scott - Flier.
6. Jerious Norwood - Dropped in many leagues after concussion and bye week.

On the Radar: Sammy Morris, Mewelde Moore, Jamaal Charles, LaMont Jordan, Rashad Jennings, Shonn Greene, Chris Henry

Wide Receivers

1. Mohamed Massaquoi - I covered this game yesterday. Massaquoi earned Anderson's trust with most of his catches coming down field against solid Leon Hall coverage. Edwards and Winslow have gotten hot under Anderson in the past.
2. Antonio Bryant - Owned in just over half of all leagues. Seems closer to full health, but Johnson caps his upside.
3. Kenny Britt - Still the No. 3 receiver, with most of his work coming in garbage time. Can he unseat Justin Gage, and what would a QB change do to his value?
4. Austin Collie - Targeted 7 times vs. 4 for Garcon. Good matchup against Titans secondary.
5. Josh Morgan - Owned in just 30%; should have had 2 TDs against Rams but dropped one.
6. Donnie Avery - Much better use of a roster spot than Keenan Burton.
7. Sam Hurd - Took over on final drive with Roy Williams out.
8. Michael Crabtree - Resumes talks with San Fran?

On the radar: Mark Clayton, Kelley Washington, Hakeem Nicks, Julian Edelman, Deion Branch, Mike Thomas, Lance Moore

Tight Ends

1. Heath Miller - Borderline at 62%, but a nice bye-week fill-in once again.
2. Bo Scaife - Now healthy, dropped in many leagues.
3. Brandon Pettigrew - Targeted 10 times in Week 4.

On the radar: Marcedes Lewis, Sean Ryan

Defenses

Unlike Week 4, all of the great matchup plays are already owned this time around. If Philly (vs. TB) was dropped on their bye week, pick them up. If San Fran (vs. ATL) is still available, by all means, grab them. Packers are nice stash for matchup against Lions in Week 6.

Desperate owners can take a chance on a rested Cardinals defenses playing at home against a Texans offense not running on all cylinders.
