Before the McNair news hit, I was all set to write a post Saturday about the changes I made in our quarterback rankings for the second magazine. So here's that post, albeit a little delayed.
***
I do less tweaking of projections between May and August than I used to. Maybe it's laziness, but I'd like to think it's an evolution towards realizing very little that has happened in minicamp season is impactful. I've looked at changes we've made in previous years, and it hasn't helped the final product. Sometimes you stare at the same rankings so long that you change them just for the sake of it.
With that said, here are a couple of minor adjustments I made between the first and second magazine. I am heading to Dallas this week, with the magazine going to our printer on Friday.
I flipped Brady Quinn and Marc Bulger, putting Quinn first. This is the only change I made that wasn't caused by news. I just don't believe in Bulger. Quinn could do ... something. Bulger doesn't pass the "Would I actually draft him?" test. Once you start drafting different than your rankings ... you have a problem.
I gave Matthew Stafford more attempts. It's become clear he'll start early in the year. He's still only an option in 2-QB leagues.
I gave Alex Smith more attempts, and Shaun Hill less. I tried not to hammer Hill's projection too much though. He's the type of QB2 I would take with Brees, Brady, or Manning. Decent upside and I won't care if he loses his job. Then I'll just replace him with Smith.
I gave Josh Freeman more attempts, taking some away from Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich. Leftwich is our highest ranked Bucs QB, if that matters. (It doesn't.)
I gave Kyle Orton slightly more attempts after being named the team's starter. But he already had plenty because I assumed he would win and he remains one of my favorite QB2 picks. Should he be higher than David Garrard? I have them 15-16.
Todd Bouman is in the house!
Brett Favre is on the board. He doesn't rank in the top 20. As Chris Johnson might tweet, kill me.

that June 28th tweet from Chris Johnson about Alicia Keys is the funniest thing i've read in while...

overall, i like the QB rankings in the first mag and probably wouldn't squabble over much.
One guy i like more than you guys is Philip Rivers. Love the consistency game to game last year.
Agree on Shaun Hill. Like the upside as a sleeper selection, downside is noodle-armed Alex Smith could take over. In a re-draft he is a solid QB2 or QB3. In a 2QB league, i would handcuff Alex Smith late in the draft.
I wouldn't touch Bulger unless i was in a really deep league. I like Quinn as a speculative pick. He is a year or two away from big things, but the potential is there.
Orton's upside has him over Garrard for me. Too many weapons for Orton not to put up big numbers, even with his accuracy issues. Still like Garrard as well, great QB2 to have on the bench.
looking forward to the follow-up issue...

I watched Matt Ryan closely last year and eventially picked him up off the wire. Is he really capable of becoming a top 5 QB with the Falcons? I think he is but don't want to go down that road with a keeper pick if I'm only dreaming. Is this only a dream?

Dude, go to the front NFL page for a little more. Get the draft guide, it's worth every penny.

I can't believe I just gave away 5 minutes of my life to read Chris Johnson's tweets. R.I.P English, you're so 2000 late.

You have to enjoy him beating his buddy in 1-on-1 and thus his buddy having to go to the mall to buy him a "v-neck"... I never even considered wagering a v-neck on anything. Shame on me...
