Westbrook's workload will drop

If past offseasons have taught us anything, the screaming headlines of June often look silly by September. So what do we make of the panic in Philadelphia after the Brian Westbrook surgery?

If I was an Eagles fan, I wouldn't be so worried yet. If I was a Westbrook fantasy owner, I would.

Even in a best case scenario (and Rotoworld has confirmed Westbrook should be running in six weeks), this injury hurts Westbrook's value significantly. Let's say Westbrook is fully healthy before Week 1 and looking like his old self. I think these surgeries, combined with Westbrook's struggles late last season, will encourage the Eagles to be extremely cautious with his workload.

This Philadelphia team is hunting big game - a championship. They won't get carried away worrying about Westbrook's contributions in October when they are focused on January. With improved weapons on both sides of the ball, especially offense, they also can be more careful with him.

After 368 touches in 2007, Westbrook dropped to 287 last season. We projected him for 275 in our first magazine, but that number is going to drop. It could be closer to 225, which is line with his averages between 2003-2005. Even if Westbrook plays well, he's unlikely to be a top-15 back with that workload. What's good for the Eagles and Westbrook won't be good for owners.

While Westy is falling McCoy is rising in dynasty rankings.

This job is wide open whenever Westy can't go for him to rack up plenty of stats and receptions, you have to love his outlook now.

Westy may be ranked around 25 or so, but in a dynasty why would anyone draft him? I wouldn't take him in the first 5 rounds of a new dynasty draft, he's going to be overdrafted and I wan't no part of a guy for one year who won't even be that dominate.

McCoy will come in with fresh legs, more explosiveness, and it'll be hard to keep feeding Westy if McCoy plays well this pre-season.

I would take the Romo deal in a heartbeat. You're getting a #1 QB for the next 4-5 years for a guy who might have #2 RB potential for the next year or two. Easy decision IMO.

The Cowboys won't regress as much as you think, and Romo will most likely cut down on INTs with not having to force balls to Owens any more.

Whoaaa now...read the first line of greg's article, "the screaming headlines of June often look silly by September."

This is one of the most depressing, panic driven boards I have seen in a long time. Keep in mind, a new "report" seems to come out on Westy's surgery every 30 minutes the latest indicating that it was considered minor by Andy Reid and co.

Don't forget that if he does indeed return by Week 1 then he is the centerpiece of the offense which is so unusual in this day and age. His workload may come off a bit but they have had no luck with drafting backs in past few years and Shady hasn't even had a carry yet. Don't forget they didn't so much as bat an eye when Buckhalter left and haven't shown (to my knowledge) any interest in any available mediocre backs, which they likely would if they were really concerned.

It's too early to be accepting panic dynasty league trades!!!

I agree, TC. Westbrook's value is sinking like a stone in Dynasty leagues, but Westbrook owners have been dealing with that for some time.

The reason we still own him is that nobody will part with enough in a trade to make it worth trading for him. I fully plan to hang on to him, but that doesn't mean that his Dynasty value is fine and dandy. It's not.

I would advise Westbrook owners not to panic. You're not going to get anywhere close to fair value for him.

Lol. I love the panic. Unfortunately unless his goaline caries go bye bye- along with his talent- westbrooks value will be where it is every year.. a top 5 - 1o PPR back. He will be productive he will score but he will just be more of an injury concern each year.. as weve always known. I think i remember having this conversation every year over the last 4 years. We all kno o7 was his career year but hes still talented and until he sucks - LJ, Alexander - im getting him. I only play PPR, the only style that matters, so he still has value even if he misses 6 games this year. Now i will def try to get him on the cheap in every league. LT too. Like Kurt Warner Ill ride them till they die

Drop Westy if you will becaus e of age and wear and tear, but not because of this. The arguemnet made for reducing his touches is the same I will use to make the arguement that they should not diminish greatly: The Eagles are trying to win...NOW.

Great point thart. If they feel they can win a championship then clearly your best way to get to the SB is to ride your best weapon. They could potentially run him into the ground knowing that they have a young protege to take over, in Shady, the following year.

Westy will be banged up all year we know that. But if he plays at least until they are up comfortably in games, then they will need him to win the ultra competitive NFC East.
