Gregg raised a good point about job security with his Shaun Hill post earlier today. Which other quarterbacks will have to win early in the season in order to keep their jobs?
No-Brainers:
Kyle Orton, Broncos – Far from a lock to be a long-term answer in Denver, Orton’s contract is up after the season and Josh McDaniels could go in another direction.
Chad Pennington, Dolphins – The Miami papers have been all over this one. Chad Henne is ready, Penny is a poor bet to stay healthy and his contract is up after the season.
Jason Campbell, Redkins – The Redskins refuse to commit to Campbell beyond ’09. Another stretch of games like the second half of last season will land him on the bench.
JaMarcus Russell, Raiders – Russell will start Week 1 regardless of preseason performance, but Jeff Garcia is looming if the offense stumbles out of the gate.
Shaun Hill – When you look at his performance and won-loss record, Hill has earned a long look. Alex Smith, though, has better tools and is the apple of the GM’s eye.
Longshots:
Marc Bulger – Kyle Boller isn’t there to apply pressure, but he could jump in if Bulger plays like he has over the past two seasons.
Kerry Collins – For as much positive press as Collins received last season, he simply wasn’t that good – even against eight and nine defenders in the box. Much will depend on Vince Young’s progress.
Matt Cassel – It would be a different story if the Chiefs would lock him up, but as it is Cassel is on a one-year trial run. He has to prove last year was no fluke.
Jake Delhomme – The Panthers surprisingly committed to Delhomme long-term, so his benching would be a major upset. He’d have to completely tank to get pulled.
The Jets, Lions, Bucs, Vikings and Browns are a little too obvious for this list since the starting jobs haven’t even been won yet.

Not sure if JaMarbust fits into the No-Brainers category, for no other reason than Crazy Al (and his no brain) will never admit he whiffed that badly. The only thing more important to him than "Just Win Baby" is to make damn sure nobody tells him he is/was/will ever be wrong. He's got the pedal to the floor, but he couldn't care less what direction the car is facing ... kind of like most senile, blind, stubborn old seniors who had to walk to school when they were kids, 10 miles, in the snow, with no shoes, uphill both ways.

putting aside whether Juggs has a bad relationship with a senior in his life, the man makes a good point :-)
"short leash" suggests that a guy will get pulled this year. that means a decent option has to be on the roster already. i don't think any of the following are decent options, which means the QB1's should be safe this year:
Colt Brennan
Kyle Boller
Matt Moore (or whoever is now QB2 in Carolina, I forget)
Alex Smith (notwithstanding my earlier post on Hill).
On the flipside of that coin, I think Vince Young will be seen as a decent option by his owner. Collins was worse than the media suggested last year. He's old old old. It's one thing to keep him in when you have a dominant D, strong running game, and are winning loads of games. It's an entirely different situation if you start losing games. In other words, Haynesworth may cost Collins his job (while giving job security to Campbell). If the Titans start poorly (say, 2-4), then people will start calling for Vince bigtime.
P.S. Why Carolina paid Delhomme so much is a big mystery. I'm talking "how did Rush Limbaugh ever have a NFL job" kind of mystery.

It looks as though the QB carousel will be in full effect in 2009 (as usual). Dynasty success (especially in 2 QB leagues) comes from monitoring these situations closely and waiting for the next stud to make a move - See Chad Henne. Many of the leagues young QB's get plenty of respect in our rankings based on age and upside. Take a look.
