Will Brett Favre help Adrian Peterson?

While we all enjoy the fallout over Artie Lange's show-stealing performance on Joe Buck Live, let's turn our attention back to Lange's opening act: Brett Favre. (I’d love to write 1,000 words on Lange, but I’m almost as ill-suited to do so as Joe Buck is to host a comedy-tinged program.)

I blogged on NBCSports.com last night summarizing the Favre appearance. The short version: he’s all but a Viking now.

Buck's line of questioning about how Favre would enjoy playing with Adrian Peterson got me thinking: Will Favre help Peterson's fantasy value?

In theory, yes. Favre is roughly a league average quarterback at this point, but that's a big upgrade from Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte from last season. In reality, though, we must examine whether Favre is that much better than Sage Rosenfels. I doubt he is.

Rosenfels, like Favre, can move the chains. There are questions about the consistency of each player's deep ball, and both players will turn the ball over too much.

The main advantage Favre has over Rosenfels, from Peterson's perspective, is that he'll guarantee that Tarvaris Jackson is on the bench. That is no small advantage, and it promises an upgrade at quarterback for Peterson from 2008. And it's pretty exciting to think of what Adrian Peterson could do with any more advantages.

"League average" may be a bit kind.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb

DVOA = 'per play' value vs. an "average" replacement: -2.2%, 26th in the League (between Flacco and Orton).

DYAR = aggregate value in yards above a "replacement level" backup given the same game situations: +335, 20th in the League (between Orton and Roethlisberger).

(BTW, Rosenfels ranked 21st and 27th in those stats, respectively, with the latter stat being depressed by his not being a starter for much of the season.)

True, this doesn't consider the toll of injuries as the season progresses, but with a soon-to-be-40 player, is it really rational to expect his health to be better next season?

This year Favre will be straight makin' copies.

Enoch wtf are you talking about? Who cares about stats like that DVOA and DYAR? You must have had to dig pretty deep to come up with some lame stats like that.
Mark, Zen, TC Thank you for the voice of reason!
Enoch you want stats try 9th in TD passes and 11th in Yards in 2008! Plus he was in that chicken shet Jets offense that threw nothing but screen passes and were afraid to throw ball downfield.
Greg disappointed in your article, to even compare Sage journeyman Rosenfels to Brett Favre is rediculous.
Everyone in the league respects Favre because they know the damage he can do. Favre will be going to an offense that he knows like the back of his hand, he knows every check down and every defensive formation thrown at him.
As far as Thomas Jones did what he did due to his offensive line don't make me laugh sure Faneca was a good addition and had some rookies perform well. Let's see what T. Jones does with Sanchez or Clemons under center with that same OL.
If AP stays healthy this year chalk up 2000 yards with Favre under center.
One other tidbit of info with Pennington in '07 Jets went 5-11 with Favre in '08 10-6 and the division came down to the final game of the season.
Sure he is 40 but he can still play the game and play it at a high level.
The Viking couldn't be a more perfect fit for Favre. The OL the defense the best RB in the league, the speed on the outisde and addition of Harvin in the slot. Look out!

Nobody's mentioned it at all (suprisingly), but how about Bernard Berrian? I like him a lot when Favre signs!

There are so many homers here its hillarious. Calling on the superbowl and guys whipping out stats to argue. Favre is done.....done and done.

If Favre is playing for Min. AP goes for 2000 yards rushing. Last year AP had 1760 yards rushing at an avg. of 4.8 per. This is when team defenses only had to think one thing, stop AP. With Favre the field will be wide open. With Favre this will be a historic season for AP. His carries should drop but his YPC will go up alot say 6.2 at 330 carries, 2046 yrds rushing.

How about worst in INTs (and second-worst in INT%, after Frerotte), 8th in total attempts (which naturally explains why he ranked high in total yards), and 22nd in yards/attempt (which is below average for starters).

Frankly, it's amazing that he's still playing as well as he is at his age. But that said, he's nowhere near the player he was when he was 30.
