Baltimore backfield breakdown, the sequel

Last week I attempted to break down the Ravens backfield situation and came to the conclusion that folks may be going overboard on Ray Rice's redraft value. The local rags have been pumping Rice relentlessly, but the team never figured to abandon its multi-pronged attack.

In a revealing interview with CBSSports.com offensive coordinator Cam Cameron removed all suspense, declaring his backfield a true committee attack.

What did we learn from Cameron that ran counter to what the local media has been reporting?

  • Though he won't receive as many carries as last season, Le'Ron McClain is still considered a tailback rather than a old-fashioned fullback.

  • Ray Rice hasn't had the first-team offensive snaps to himself this offseason.

  • The Ravens can protect Joe Flacco better this year than last, so the team's rushing attempts will decline albeit slightly.

  • The team has yet to set a depth chart, so where the backs have lined up thus far is irrelevant.

For the 2009 season, the song remains the same as last week's analysis. Rice may emerge as a RB3/Flex option, but he's going to be splitting carries with Willis McGahee and losing short-yardage work to McClain. It's still a backfield to avoid until the mid-rounds of fantasy drafts.

I have Rice in a keeper league. One of the reasons I drafted him last year is because of OC Cam Cameron. His system plays out well for RB's, they usually have success. This year RB/3 is about right. Next year Rice should move up to RB/2 status or better depending on his receiving yards

In a one year league, why would anyone wade into this? Denver and Balt are fantasy killers with this approach...I've seen far too many 12 carry, 55 yard games to want any part of this

The ravens truly have a great running game, Ray Rice will definatly be a great up and coming running back. Willis Mcgahee, i feel can stay healthy this year. Look at last year, he got hurt and had nagging injuries because he didnt practice for months before the season becuase of his off season knee surgury. so he came straight into the season not conditioned and ready for hits. notice towards the end of the 2008 season how well he did, from the cowboys game, to the both play off games, he is also very good at picking up the blitz...this year he did have two surgeries but has been healthy the last couple of weeks running at full speed and running with the first team offense. Mcgahee will stay healthy think about the first year he was on the ravens, they had no pass game and were stacking 7-8 players in the box everytime and willis had 1200 yards, and 8 tds. he stayed healthy until the week 16... Now ray rice has added bulk and will be a good change up for mcgahee... ray is smaller quick and very powerful shedding blockers and pushing piles.. he will be much more included into the offense... then theyre gunna give the ball to mcclain to pound a tired defense at the end of the game... mcclain has added weight, but has great balance and is a great blocker... last year they played the best defenses in the nfl.. the giants eagles steelers (these are just a few) now they have also added michael oher at tackle, the ravens will truly have the best ground game in the NFL
