Baltimore backfield breakdown

What has changed about the Baltimore running back situation since the 2008 season ended?

Ray Rice

  • Running with the first-team offense this offseason.
  • Has put on several pounds of good weight to handle a heavier workload.
  • Coach Harbaugh: "No question he can be an every-down back".

    Willis McGahee

  • Underwent offseason surgery on both his ankle and his always-troublesome knee.
  • By many accounts, the prohibitive cap hit is the only reason he's still on the roster.
  • Work ethic questioned and hasn't been winning favors with the Harbaugh/Cameron staff since last summer.

  • LeRon Mc'Clain

  • Coaching staff envisions him in more of a traditional fullback role this season after losing Lorenzo Neal.
  • Showed up to offseason minicamps about 20 pounds over his playing weight.
  • Expected to keep short-yardage duties.

The Beckett/Rotoworld fantasy football magazine is due to hit newsstands shortly, but here's a hint about how we see the Ravens backfield value shaking out: We like Ray Rice this year.

That said, folks may be going overboard on his re-draft value based on early offseason news. Even if we like him to lead the team in carries, Harbaugh seems to prefer a two-pronged rushing attack. Just as troublesome for Rice's fantasy value is the potential loss of goal-line work to McClain.

While we like Ray Rice to emerge as a fantasy factor this season, he's more of a RB3 than a legit weekly starter.

In Dynasty leagues, however, his value is rising steadily. McGahee is clearly not a part of the Ravens' future, and Rice's 45 touchdowns! in his last two years at Rutgers suggest that goal-line work won't be a problem down the road. He could be ready for poor man's Maurice Jones-Drew production by 2010.

Statement about Rice's Dynasty value is accurate. His value is quickly rising as he is the best ball carrier in the Ravens backfield. McGahee has little dynasty value, while it's not unrealistic to think McClain could have 8-10 TD's in 2009. He's a great Ray Rice handcuff although he is what he is. Our Dynasty Rankings have Rice, McGahee and McClain listed 25,45,49 respectively.

Is Derrick Ward still a better option in a no-ppr?

I'd say Ray Rice is the better option in a no-ppr. By the end of the year Rice will be the primary back. The only question is that McClain will steal some touchdowns from him but I envision a solid year from Rice.
