Who dey evolution?

Unlike Bengals fan reformed NFL supporter Chris Wesseling, I'm in agreement with Silva's post last night that the Bengals passing attack will be a good place to look for value. (Actually, I don't know if Wess agrees, but it's fun to assume.) So let’s piggyback on what Silva wrote, in handy list form.

1. Chad Johnson is on the majority of teams I've drafted thus far, Mock or otherwise. I haven't taken him any earlier than the end of the fourth round. It's usually been in the fifth.

2. Laveranues Coles would have been on my busts list if he didn't land in the absolute perfect situation. I don't like small, slow possession receivers who are always banged up. The Bengals will force the ball to him, so he's projected to maintain value. Deep down, he still worries me. A boom or bust.

3. It was only one game, but Andre Caldwell's playmaking skills were impressive in Week 17. He made multiple people miss every time he touched the ball. He was my pick in our magazine poll for a deep dynasty sleeper.

Coles squashes his redraft value, but Caldwell is someone to watch closely or draft in deep PPR leagues in case Coles tanks. (Of course, Chris Henry still has a chance to step up. Why did they need to overpay Coles again?)

To sum up: Carson Palmer is convinced there won't be a need for billboards this year.

You assumed correctly, for the following reasons:

1. The offensive line is still a mess ... has been for a few years now.

2. Palmer is a major health risk. Too, his mobility has fallen off a cliff since the ACL injury.

3. Ochocinco has been fully Bengalized a/k/a he no longer gives a crap. Let someone else draft him.

4. What happens when this team starts out the season with two or three losses again? Back down the rabbit hole, giving up on the season in September for at least the 10th time in the past 19 years.

5. Laveranues Coles can no longer stay healthy and has very little speed left. He's toeing the cliff.

In summary, let someone else draft Bengals this year. They might surprise, but odds are against it.

Ocho has me worried. He was such a beast and so consistent for so long, but he really fell off last year. I can write some of that off to QB play and his shoulder injury, but he is on the wrong side of 30. In a re-draft I would take him as a WR2/3 and hope for a bounce back. In a dynasty league, if i own him, i am hoping he starts strong and then dealing him.

I never really liked Laveraneus Coles, but i do admit situation is not that bad. He is a frustrating guy to own and has never been a big TD threat, but he'll have solid PPR value this year. In a redraft league, i think he will provide decent value if you can get him late. In a dynasty, you probably have to hold onto him because you aren't likely to be offered too much for him in trade. If you are, obviously take it.

I once had high hopes for Chris Henry. He is still young, still a great redzone threat and still probably going to get in trouble. He's as risky as any bengal, but he could have value this year and end up being a great sleeper (or a huge bust)

Andre Caldwell's immediate value is stunted, but looking at the aging WR corp. he could be a nice dynasty player in the long-term.

Jerome Simpson has a long way to go, but if he puts it together, he may surprise as well. Remember, he is coming from a small college and there has definitely been a learning curve, but he has talent.

Hopefully, Carson Palmer is 100% healthy but he is still risky. I would roll the dice in a re-draft because of his upside, but only if i could secure a very solid QB2. ESPN.com likes him to bounceback with a solid season, projecting 3800 yards, 23 TD and 19 INT, ranking him the 14th overall QB. Beastorbust.com has him 10th overall in there dynasty QB rankings. In a dynasty league, I think he is a great high risk/reward option if the price is right.

And i think that sums up the Bengals entire offense at this point - high risk / medium to high reward. Could be some good bargains had, but you could also end up getting burned.

Well as Gregg hints, it's all about where you get them, i.e., value.

If I can get Ocho in the 5th round, I'll pull the trigger in almost any format (especially in PPR leagues where you need to start 3 WRs and a flex). Coles will be even more overlooked I'm guessing.

It's all about targets. Cinncy has nothing in the way of TEs or RBs that can receive so they have to force the ball to their WRs.

Couple that with a terrible defense and Cinncy will throw, throw, throw. You may not like Ocho or Laverneous, but if they are getting 12 balls each thrown their way a game, isn't that worth a 5th and an 8th rounder to get the pair?

If your looking for a Tight End for this season, or for the long term in Dynasty Formats, Chase Coffman (if healthy - he's been injured...) can be an excellent receiving option for Carson Palmer. A big, athletic receiving TE has never been in Palmers arsenal before. Coffman was the #1 rated rookie TE in BeastOrBust.com rookie profiles and I've heard NFL analysts saying Coffman is capable of catching 100 balls by 2010.

Does Beast or Bust realize that Coffman is coming off surgery and won't be ready before training camp, if then?

Not to mention a healthy Utecht is a solid receiving TE. Coffman projects as the Bengals long term passing down TE, but his ability to be an every down TE is very much in question.

If I were gonna post here pimping a website, I'd come stronger than Chase Coffman.

i've heard good things about coffman, i'm not sure about 100 catches by 2010, but the potential is there. just needs to get healthy and learn to block a little better. could be a great value in the later rounds of rookie drafts this year.

capable of catching 100 balls on the sideline. after the disaster that was utecht last year, i'm going to stay away from Cincy TE's until they prove me wrong.
