Tough to Rank: Pierre Thomas

Great job on post yesterday: 48 comments! Now on to today's subject ...

Oh, Pierre: we have come so far together. One of favorite muses on this blog, a popular Fantasy Fix topic last summer, and a top-three fantasy back down the stretch. He put up 677 total yards, 19 catches, and nine scores in a career-altering six week stretch. Now it's time to cash in. Right?

Not everyone agrees. Thomas' ADP is all over the map. It seems like he could go anywhere from early in round three to round five, depending on what draft you are in.

I don't expect Thomas to keep up his pace from the end of last year when Reggie Bush returns, but what else has really changed? Here's what I wrote for our magazine:

The Saints failed to add a power back to complement Thomas. ... Tougher than his size suggests, he’s the underpaid man’s Maurice Jones-Drew. Bush will be back to steal receptions, but Thomas is clearly the favorite to lead the team in carries and rushing scores. He’ll play on the goal-line.

So where would you guys take him? I'm struggling to decide how to rank him, Kevin Smith, and Ronnie Brown, who came out identical in my original projections. Let's assume, for this exercise, the Saints don't add another quality back to the mix. We can't build that into our projections, we have to evaluate what we know about him right now. Any change to his circumstance is what our second magazine and online draft guide are for.

Also much thanks to those of you who have jumped on the Twitter train with me. I'll be shooting in quick thoughts on rankings, news, links, and magazine projections there.

I too think that Thomas will lead the Saints in carries and get the goal line work this season. I have him as my 15th ranked back, right behind Ronnie Brown and 5 spots ahead of Kevin Smith. I predict 270 carries for 1070 and 11tds on the ground with 35 catches for 280 and a score.

I am biased since he is the main reason I won my league's championship this season. However, I think that he should be drafted as a high upside RB3. He destroys when he is allowed to play, but we are talking a very unpredictable situation considering Bush's presence and unreliable rushing attempts. Very high upside but just too unpredictable for me to place above a tier 3.

Pierre Thomas is a beast. He averaged a full yard more than Bush toting the rock and .7 yards more a catch. He also averaged 10.3 YAC yards compared to Bush's 7.5 YAC yards. Bush's highest total in his career is 8.2. Pierre is just a better back in every aspect of his game. He just doesn't have the name Bush has. Couple all this with Bush missing 10 games in the last 2 seasons and I think it is safe to rank Thomas higher. Chances are he will be their only back come fantasy playoff time.

I like both PT and Bush. but lets not get carried away here. both have roles and neither will dominate the other no matter how much man crush u put on one of them. this is a timeshare. a direct RBBC. one is solid, lacking exceptional speed, but a pure inside, tough runner. the other is pure explosion and gamebracking finesse and soft hands.

i think both will be good. remember when Deuce was good a couple years ago. pre 2008, pre 2007, back in '06 when each player was a solid fantasy producer. BARRING INJURIES, this is what i predect will happen here. two solid RB2's, each holding the other back from dominance... well maybe reggie could never truely dominate, but u get my drift. two solid fantasy producers syphoning off eachothers stats.

its been this way ever since peyton arrived, why would it change now. much like the debate with had about DWill yesterday, the coaching personality comes into play here. as long as peyton is there, they'll have a dominant offense, great passing game, atleast one unsung out of nowhere WR, and a completely split RBBC. get used to it. it aint changin. so lets just hope which ever u draft holds up the whole year.

and i dont want to hear about how one is more talented and blah blah. the fact is both bush and PT produced greatly while the other did not, and vice versa, at both halves of the year. so they both can put up fantasy points. and i will never believe anyone that says one of them cant.

I love Pierre Thomas, but a healthy Reggie Bush is going to eat into his numbers and i would be leery of taking him too early in a re-draft. He still will have plenty of value though and once Bush goes down (again) he'll be a legit No. 1 RB, especially in that offense. BeastOrBust.com has him ranked pretty high in their RB rankings because of his long term upside.

Pierre Thomas is a good sell high. Just because the Saints didn't draft a goalline back doesn't mean they won't sign one in these months leading up to the season starting. They certainly made it clear they'd like to add one, which is a solid indicator that they do lack some faith in Thomas. Specifically, his inability to survive his audition at the end of last season without injury. And then it should also be noted that Reggie Bush is in a frenzied state right now, working out so hard that members of his own team are cautioning him to 'save some for the season'. I think that as in the case of the Deangelo Williams post the other day, there is a case of Roto-Favoratism happening here. Last year, Kevin Arnold predicted that J-Stew would step in and take the starting job from Deangelo. Instead, Deangelo ripped it up and J-Stew spelled him. But instead of taking sober stock of the situation and admitting that Deangelo has earned his keep, articles are published asking how far down he will fall in drafts. Same goes with Pierre Thomas. Always a 'sleeper' favorite of Rotoworld scribes, he's being hailed as the second coming of MJD. Beware the signing of Edgerrin James, Rudi Johnson, or Gary Russell for example. If P. Thomas isn't getting goalline work, and Reggie bush is definitely working the passing downs... what you've got is Fargas-like in its opportunity for production.

But that's just my two cents. Sell NOW for a first rounder while the hype-train is blowing through the station. Find the guy in your league whose been working so hard to convince you Reggie Bush sucks, by showing you stats about his poor yards-per-carry avg and nagging injuries. That guy will take P. Thomas off your hands just to prove his point. Meanwhile, grab yourself Reggie Bush with the pick and don't care a bit about his crappy yards-per-carry. Just soak up the sweet, sweet 5 receptions a game for 50 yards, a score, and another 50 or 60 rushing yards and a score. The question should really be: How underrated is Reggie Bush as a PPR Beast, heading into this season?
