Tough to Rank: DeAngelo Williams

Time for everyone's favorite short-lived running segment from last year I forgot about: Tough to Rank. In it, I bring up a player that could seemingly go in any direction and throw it to the floor to find out your infinite wisdom.

First up is last year's Fantasy MVP: DeAngelo Williams. In the first half of last season, Williams was the RB19: 620 total yards, five scores. In the second half, he went bonkers: 1,038 total yards, 15 scores!

The Panthers had 500 rushing attempts and 30 rushing scores last year. Those overall numbers are likely to fall with a tougher schedule that includes both Eastern Divisions.

So which guy do we get this year? Jonathan Stewart had 89 fewer carries than Williams last year; will he close the gap?

Early Mock Draft data has Williams going as a mid-to-late first-round pick. My tone here probably makes it obvious that I see that as tough to swallow. But obviously we can't dismiss last year's top scorer. Let me know where you think he fits.

Hey "dude", Williams isn't even the best RB on his own TEAM, let in all of football. DeAngelo had the benefit of Stewart starting slowly and recovering from an injury/surgery in the offseason. Anybody that pays first round price for Williams this year is WAY over paying.

I think people are underestmating him, and are enamoured with Stewart because he's still shiny and new. DWill was a first round pick and was projected by many to do very well in the NFL. He has all of the skills to be a three down back, and he showed it in the 2nd half of last year.

People mention that he couldn't be Foster for the starters role. But Fox has always been very loyal to his veterans over his younger players. Remember when Foster was the hot, new back but was stuck behind Stephen Davis? I think Fox knows what he has in DWill and will continue to feed him the ball, with Stewart coming in to spell him. They didn't take Stewart high to replace DWill, but to compelment him, because Fox wants to run the ball all game long.

DWill will slip in drafts because of Stewart, and I think he'll be a draft-day bargain this year for where you can get a top 5 RB.

I believed in DeAngelo last year and was rewarded for my faith because I had Deshaun Foster the previous year. And if their is one thing to count on in Carolina it is that Coach Fox is loyal to the veterans that have been there. Also, last year was the first year Delhomme has been healthy along side Steve Smith in a couple of years. Williams will be drafted high because he can still be productive, but I believe last season was the high water mark for his career at least in TDs. But I'd put his numbers if healthy all season around 1400 total yards and 12-14 TDs.

Williams represents good value after pick #6 with his ability to catch the ball and working within the confines of a run first offense. After the 5 or so stud backs that dominate their teams, everyone else is in some type of job share. I expect that there will be plenty of "spoils" for Williams, even with the presence of Stewart, within Carolina's offensive system.

Same guy that couldn't beat out Foster? C'mon, he was still learning the NFL system. This guy was amazing last year. How any coach would back off on his carries would be mind-boggling. Talent wise he is top 3 RB in the NFL period! Stewart, when healthy will get some carries again, but he hasn't stayed healthy since High-School. DW will run wild again this year!

DeAngelo is a top 5, or at latest top 10 pick. Fox will never allow a rookie or inexperienced back to take over his bread and butter game. He just might be the stubbornest coach in football. He and Gruden love his vets and will ride them for as long as hes there (see: Mush, Delhomme, etc). I would galdly take him with the 7-10 pick in a redraft and laugh.. laugh! laugh! lol.. okay, i would just take him and chuckle a little. but point is hes in too good of a situation to pass up. Stewart will be a handcuff again this year barring injury, but dreams of m.forte being selected behind him in just about every dynasty draft last year will haunt his owners. i dont think stewart will reach that kind of potential anytime soon.

Williams is the new LT, and that hurts to say as a Buccaneers fan. At this point, I think he should go as the first RB taken as a matter of fact. After what he did to the Bucs, you can't tell me this guy isn't in the top 5 in RBs
