Matt Jones Avoids Suspension

It was widely presumed that Matt Jones would be suspended to open the 2009 season after he was jailed in March for violating his probation stemming from a July 2008 arrest for cocaine possession. The original cocaine charge resulted in last year's Week 15-17 suspension.

Now comes word that Jones is on the hook for a mere $50,000 fine, which he's appealing. He's eligible to play in Week 1 and free to sign with any team after Jacksonville released him in March.

Why was Jones merely fined and not suspended? Probably because the NFL looked at his probation violation as a very minor offense. Jones drank two beers on a golf outing two days before an alcohol test. He also did a week's worth of time behind bars. That was good enough for the commissioner.

Jones looked like a bust entering last season, but turned it on with an average of 5.4 catches for 63.4 yards per game in a mediocre-at-best passing offense. Before his year-ending suspension, Jones was the fantasy WR36 overall -- a strong matchup play and borderline WR3. He has a big-play speed/size combination and can dominate a game when focused.

Character red flags will keep Jones' price tag down, so even teams up against the salary cap can get in the mix . The Dolphins, Jets, Ravens, Chiefs, Redskins, Rams, and Bears should all show interest. The Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants appear satisfied with what they have right now and seem less likely fits.

The bears could really use a solid WR, especially one with size like Jones.

Cutler would make a good fit as he too seems to imbibe more often then he should.

Oh please isn't it obvious? Jones is going to get picked up by Cincy. Shame on you, Evan, for not making the Bengals the #1 choice. Similar to how the Patriots will rotate old timers in and out at linebacker so they only have to play 30 plays a game, Cincy will rotate young guys in and out of prison so they only have to play 8 games a year.

Is there no way the Roto-techies can figure a way to keep self-serving link posters like this mybrute asshole from posting shit that everyone else is tired of being inundated with? Better yet, create a program that automatically emails the prick every single ad/blog/pop-up/link that comes across your otherwise fantastic site.
