Get your wideouts early

Roddy White is a second rounder
I'm back from our publishers (which you would have known if you were getting your Twitter on), although we are going overtime wrapping up the magazine today. Damn those Dallas lightning storms!
It appears I haven't missed much this week. You know things are slow when John Elway's opinion on his son and the Ochocinco jersey story are lead items.
While everything is fresh on my mind, I'm going to drop a few big picture thoughts on this year's draft season in the blog over the next few days. Let's start with the wideouts.
Wide receiver is heavy at the top, shallow at the bottom this year. There are better first and second-round options than ever. A ton of wideouts worth taking ahead of most RB2s, (I have eleven), but there is a quick fall to the WR3 level, and then it falls off a cliff somewhere around the sixth round.
Things quickly change from Donald Driver, Laveranues Coles, and Hines Ward to Nate Washington and Steve Smith of the Giants. This is much more dramatic than usual.
I'm going to try to get three wideouts in the early portions. But even if I don't, I think you can wait until very deep in the draft to build your depth. There appears to be very little difference between the WR35 and the WR55, and everyone is going to disagree on them a ton. So you may as well wait to grab them.

I totally agree, dude. I'm drafting 12th in a 12-team league, and I am seriously considering taking two WRs at the turn, especially if Fitz and Andre J are both still there.

Makes sense, especially with most RB's in a committee format and the solid number of good but not great QB's out there that will get you dependable numbers. Why not try to load up on stud receivers. Point worth considering though - would you also factor getting a top-3 tight end in the mix, say a whitten or a gonzalez?

This is obviously a little early, but its relevant to the article..
im in a keeper league in which i fortunatley have andre johnson, calvin johnson, brandon marshall, and dwayne bowe. Anyway you recomend me keeping johnson, johnson and bowe? my other options are westbrook (shakey, and a rookie waiting), Slaton (can he handle a whole year again?) and thomas jones (old? washington?). Im seriously considering johnson johnson and bowe, and frankly this article backs me up a bit.

I'm in a keeper league and I have Calvin, Andre, Chris Johnson and MJDrew. We can only keep 3 and I'm really leaning toward Calvin and Andre along with MJDrew. I think I can draft in the next 2 rounds a good RB.

Thomas G. That is to funny that we both have Calvin and Andre. I also have Randy Moss, and slaton. I really want to keep Chris Johnson I think he will have a very explosive season 1200 + yards but I can't see dropping Calvin or Andre.

Thomas G,
In a 3-player keeper league, I don't see how you can throw Westbrook back. You still have to go for the title this year, and you'll have Johnson & Johnson for a future nucleus.
