Skinny Posts: NFL Draft nuggets

ESPN.com has a cool new tool to help amateur draftniks while away even more time at the cubicle: Introducing the NFL Draft Machine.

  • Peter King shares 10 draft nuggets from NFL Network's Mike Mayock, who says this is the worst year he’s ever seen for picking in the Top-10.

  • Michael Lombardi believes the best time to draft a quarterback is when you have one, but don’t the Seahawks have too many other needs?

  • I’m nowhere near the draft maven or college football expert that Evan Silva is, so I was oblivious to Percy Harvin’s “laundry list” of off-the-field issues. Still, it looks like a Matterhorn out of a molehill to me.

  • As if we needed proof that the top of the draft is no longer a coveted spot for NFL franchises, beat writer Tom Kowalski wonders why the Lions wouldn’t at least look into the possibility of passing on the No. 1 pick. The NFL points out that it's a perfectly legal maneuver.

  • Meanwhile, the Rams are willing to deal the No. 2 pick, and the Kansas City Star suggests the Chiefs should be open to trading the No. 3 pick to their division rivals.

The way I understand it : 1st round draft picks are expected to be starters and require millions in guaranteed money to sign and have to hold out until all 1st round picks drafted below them has signed so they can get more than everyone drafted below them. Second round picks don't have this sweet deal and sign multi year low pay contracts but are also expected to be starters right away. I think with the exception of a few rare players, like Jake Long LT MIA, there is a big risk that their college skills won't translate into success in the pros. I'm surprised it took teams this long to figure that on average high 1st round picks don't work out.

I think the NFL should do what my fantasy league does: let teams draft their draft slot for the first round. The worst team could choose the number one slot if there was a stud they had to have, or they could choose the second, third, fifth, or fifteenth spot depending on their needs, draft board, and salary cap situation. The second to worst team would then get to choose their slot, and so on. This would be done at the owners' meetings, well before the draft. This would only apply to the first round, and all subsequent rounds would follow the normal draft order. Any team that moved down 5 slots would get a supplemental pick at the end of the second round. Any team that moved down 10 spots would get supplementals at the end of the second and forth rounds.
