Pancake Blocks Mock: Pick No. 7

So far, the Mock Drafts haven't been afraid to think outside of the box. I like it, although Curry-to-Maybin one pick apart seems like a big drop. Oakland can go in a lot of directions with the seventh pick; Andrew W. has the honors.
When looking at the Oakland Raiders, they have a lot of glaring holes all over the team. With the top two tackles gone, it still wouldn't surprise me to see Al Davis pull the trigger on Andre Smith. He has character flaws, but that's never stopped Davis from picking up a player as talented as Smith before.
I still don't see how they can trot out the receivers they have and expect JaMarcus Russell to succeed though. They might have a stud running game, but throwing to Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens at WR is no way to help a young QB thrive. For that reason, they have to take Jeremy Maclin here. He has nice size and speed, and would instantly be a starter for the receiver needy team.
2009 Pancake Blocks Mock Draft
1. Detroit Lions (Sparty) - Jason Smith
2. St. Louis Rams (Evan) - Eugene Monroe
3. Kansas City Chiefs (Dude Abides) - Michael Crabtree
4. Seattle Seahawks (LunaticFringe) - Aaron Curry
5. Cleveland Browns (Thomas G.) - Aaron Maybin
6. Cincinnati Bengals (Wesseling) - Brian Orakpo
7. Oakland Raiders (Andrew W.) - Jeremy Maclin
8. Jacksonville Jaguars (Matt G.) - On the clock

If the draft really plays out this way, this would seem to be worst case scenario for the raiders, to have to reach to get one of these receivers this early, I would assume they would try to trade down. But for the purposes of this mock it seems like a fine pick. While the raiders have needs everywhere, they really really really need a receiver. No one named Chaz should start for any NFL team ever. Sorry to any Chaz's out there, but really even you must agree.

crabtree is absolutely gone here in real life, if not when CLE picks. this is a reach. but this is a deep receiver class so its possible that multiple will pan out. so i guess as long as the guy is good it doesnt really matter where u pick him.

of all the receivers, i really want to see where the NC cats go, especially nicks. why is it that mike williams always comes to mind when i think of him??

JaMarcus was, is, going to be a bust. Its already written!!! No need to waste more talent on him since he cant throw the ball accurately to any player on the move anyways.
My thoughts are build the team like Chicago/Minnesota and win some games by defence and hard running.

very similar build and situation except Nicks is going straight to the pros and not sitting on his fat ass for a year.

and nicks is much faster (4.49 on a slow track at the combine to williams' 4.58/4.59 at USC pro day), williams was also built like a tight end/h-back at 6'5/242 after a month-long fast. at 6'1/212 nicks is a wideout. nicks had tyler yates and cameron sexton throwing to him and fought off double teams his entire final season, while williams had carson palmer/matt leinart throwing to him and keary colbert operating opposite him.
mark it down, nicks will dominate.
