Pancake Blocks Mock: Pick No. 3

The ubiquitous commenter known 'round these parts as The Dude Abides turns in the Chiefs' pick at No. 3. This pick may be seen as a bit of a surprise, but The Dude has obviously thought it through.
The Chiefs selection comes down to the two highest rated athletes in the draft: Aaron Curry and Crabtree. Curry would help a young, shaky defense but if the Chiefs saw him as a real possibility here, they probably wouldn't have given Zach Thomas starter money, even if only for a year.
The NFL stat with the highest correlation to winning is first half passing offense. The Chiefs had a fun passing offense a year ago and moved the ball with the Pistol Spread, but were inefficient all over the field and especially in the Red Zone. Dwayne Bowe is currently a player in the Brandon Marshall/Chris Chambers mode.
Bowe's raw stats look good but depend heavily on volume. Mark Bradley is not an NFL player. Crabtree is the best player in the draft, the next Andre1500. With Cassel and Bowe, Crabtree gives new coach Todd Haley his own version of Warner/Fitzgerald/Boldin. GM Scott Pioli was part of putting together the Brady/Moss/Welker juggernaut. He won't pass on the guy who'll make his newly handpicked QB look like a superstar.
2009 Pancake Blocks Mock Draft
1. Detroit Lions (Sparty) - Jason Smith
2. St. Louis Rams (Evan) - Eugene Monroe
3. Kansas City Chiefs (The Dude Abides) - Michael Crabtree
4. Seahawks (DJ Omahan) - On the clock

The KC Star beat writers are all over Curry, rightly feeling the Chiefs Front-7 on defense is a shambles but like the real Dude, Duder, El Duderino would say, "That's just like your opinion, man." And I think the Thomas signing effectively rules Curry out.
Chiefdom is currently ablaze with angry sentiments about Pioli's signing of old players (a hallmark of the failed Carl Peterson Era), but I think that misses the point. A simplistic approach like the one Edwards had and Mike Lombardi loves to lampoon - "Let's Build Something Together" - doesn't work in such a complex and competitive environment as the NFL.
Pioli will be trying to leverage certain positions against each other and buy time. Signing Thomas and trading for Vrabel doesn't mean those positions are suddenly set, but it does mean the Chiefs don't have to use the #3 pick on a lower value position.
You can get younger in many ways. One way would be signing Thomas (who costs you nothing draftwise), drafting Crabtree (who profiles out as a cross between Andre Johnson and TO), and then trading your best receiver - who just happens to be an aging TE - for a second round pick.
This way you get the best player (Crabtree), you add picks (2nd rounder), you address more positions, and your team gets younger. See adding Thomas makes the Chiefs younger. That's something Edwards never would have thought of.

Dude, as a Bronco fan, your logic makes so much sense I can only hope the real Chiefs don't subscribe to it.

Love this pick and the logic behind it. I have to believe they didn't trade Gonzo last year because they were trying to get the highest possible pick for him.

I can follow the logic and todays cutting of WR Will Franklin might lend some credence to it.
Although Crabtree could be had for less and Im sure Pioli would rather trade down, I dont think anyone is clammering to move into the top 5 this year.

this is a stupid pick. "bradley is not an nfl player" what logic is that. Ugh yes he is. Did u see him last year when healthy. Pioli will not draft an injured receiver here. You forget that while yes new england does pass they are also based on def first and foremost.. Something they dont have now. They will go def here without litte doubt. Remember its Piolis team not haleys.

@scott c:
Have you watched a New England game in the last 2 years? They haven't been based on defense since 2006, at least. They are all about out scoring their opponents and hoping the defense, which is held together with bubble gum and a prayer, won't give up too many points. Yes, the defense used to be the sticking point, but lately that is NOT how they've been run.

I agree Crabtree is probably the best value.
The only problem with this from the Chiefs end is they have no second round pick so they have to wait until the third round to add more pieces to their defense.
