Pancake Blocks Mock Pick: No. 26
Eric Schneider foresees the Ravens getting the steal of the draft at No. 26 overall.
The Ravens do have a glaring need at center, and a very good one in Alex Mack of California is available. However, like most people say, this is a “once in a generation draft for centers.” I think the depth of centers available allows the Ravens to look at other options with their first pick.
There have been some rumors about the Ravens looking into acquiring Anquan Boldin from the Cardinals, and I think they should definitely try. However, I don’t see the Ravens sending all their draft picks for him, and the players recently mentioned as trade bait make no sense. Even if the Cardinals have no tight end, why do they need one? They made it to the Super Bowl without a TE, and I think they can make it back without one.
Wide receiver is definitely a big need for the Ravens, since they want Joe Flacco to develop further. While Derrick Mason has been whining for a new contract, the Ravens don’t look like they want to give him one.
Darrius Heyward-Bey is a good talent, and a local product, but most scouts seem to think he has bust written all over him. Kenny Britt, another local boy, from Rutgers could go here, but I think he is still a bit too raw, and his stock has just risen as of late.
Since the Ravens won’t be able to land a marquee WR without paying too much for him, the Baltimore Ravens select, with the 26th overall selection, Wide Receiver Hakeem Nicks, University of North Carolina.

Good Pick for the Ravens. Flacco can only ever become as good as the receivers around him. This should help.

Agreed, good pick. I think they'd only have to give up their 1st for Boldin, though. Cards will drop their asking price or they're dumber in the front office than I thought...

Some stuff has just been surfacing that the Ravens are not really going to give up picks for Boldin, at least not anything significant. I think if they can get him for a second or third plus a player or two, maybe it will happen, but not if it involves their first. I think if they get Boldin, they will target Mack.

I thought that the Ravens signed Matt Birk (formerly of the Vikings) and therefore they don't have an immediate need at center anyways.

I don't think Birk is going to last very long. Maybe a couple of years. Baltimore has always had great centers, and as this draft is a good one for them, they might as well get the best one they can.
As for Nicks making it into the first round, I think he has the best chance of all the remaining WR's to make it, as Harvin is dropping like no tomorrow, and DHB was already considered a long shot before scouts had a better look at his tapes. He is a speed demon with very iffy hands and questionable route-running skills.
