Pancake Blocks Mock: Pick No. 11
Mark P. delivers the pick Dick Jauron hopes will save his job at No. 11. Here's Mark:
When LT Jason Peters is traded, expect this pick to be an OT. Since that has not yet happened, the Bills select Brandon Pettigrew, TE Oklahoma State.
Realistically, with the top tackles and top defensive ends off the board and the top two QBs remaining, Buffalo would almost certainly trade out of this spot.
The Bills have an interesting situation, in that while their offense was the problem in most of their losses, their defense is in need of more help: Four defensive linemen (Aaron Schobel, Marcus Stroud, Chris Kelsay, Ryan Denney) are 30 or older. Kawika Mitchell is 30. Keith Ellison is more of a backup than starter. No one on the defense had more than four sacks last year. Terrence McGee is in the last year of his deal. The list goes on and on.
Unfortunately, the bottom line is the Buffalo simply cannot use this pick on a project like Robert Ayers or a linebacker who isn’t a surefire three-down player. Terrell Owens’ production will need to be replaced next year, and when the team winds up with a rookie left tackle (this year or next), he’ll need blocking help. Only one player shows the ability to provide help in both areas immediately: Brandon Pettigrew, far and away the most complete TE in this year’s draft.

Gorgeous pick and commentary. There is no way the bills stay here, if the draft really falls like this someone will move up and nab QB, and it seems like I say this at every pick now, but with the situations these teams are in, they will be hungrier to trade down and acquire more picks than teams are to trade up, so teams who are eyeing a certain player, certainly won't have to pay the same price that jacksonville did last year.

i like this pick eventho most mocks dont have him going here. hes more of a surefire talent and opens up what could be an explosive offense, even in check down edwards eyes. good pick, but that def is aching for a pass rush. oh well. maybe they can get that later in the draft. if one side of the ball is more dominant that the other, maybe they can still have a winning record. i think pettigrew can have that sort of impact this year, as much as anyone can that is.

I can see this pick if Buffalo moves down, but not if they stand pat.
Id can them trading Peters for a first and a 2nd or 3rd, drafting Andre Smith here to replace him and then using their new first rounder on Pettigrew (if hes still there) and then their extra pick to address one of the areas you mentioned.

btw Does anyone else seeing Denver in a similar position to the Browns a couple years ago?
Orton as Anderson (Borderline starting QB's entering a contract year with (likely) top young rookie QB brought in via the draft)
Marshall as Edwards (High rated WR with quirks)
Scheffler as Winslow (pass catching TE's not good for much else)
Jordan as Lewis (once dominant RB brought in)

Sorry folks, but 49ers fans know they aren't taking a QB here. Shaun Hill played well down the stretch last year and Alex Smith still has the faith of the GM who drafted him. Given the ability to pick up a rush LB later in this draft, I would have said Andre Smith or a DB (Jenkins?).
