Pancake Blocks Mock: Pick No. 10
Wes Hale caps off the top ten with the San Francisco 49ers' first-round pick.
Ultimately the 49ers have only 1 pick, yet many options.
Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez should not fall the way they have here and are not likely to be viable options. Plus taking a shot on another QB in the 1st 10 picks may not happen for a while in San Francisco.
They are likely to be fielding more phone calls than any other team in the 1st round as the Broncos, Redskins, and Jets all try move ahead of each other on the draft board to grab one of the falling QBs
The 49ers have not moved backwards in a draft in 5 years. They could use the opportunity to grab a different QB like a Josh Freeman, and fill in some of their other glaring holes on both sides of the ball.
After watching intently so far, and thinking long and hard, I have decided
With the 10th pick the San Francisco 49ers select: Everette Brown - DE/OLB - Florida State
The 49ers have have a problem with 1st rounds picks on their left side for years. (Exhibits A. Kentwan Balmer and B. Manny Lawson) And 1st Round QBs should make them a little gun shy as well.
The 49ers finished 3-3 in a winnable division. The biggest element missing from those division games was pressure on the QB. Opposing divisional QBs took only 12 sacks in 6 games, and threw for an average of 240 yds which would rank 29th in the league.
Brown is the next best pure pass rusher. He led the ACC in sacks and had 21.5 TFL in '09. His mix of speed/size/strength will be the perfect complement to Patrick Willis, and should help get the defense off the field.

Comments
No chance. Based on the actual draft (and the likelihood that the top QBs may already be taken) this would be a fine pick. However, based on who is available in this mock draft, and Singletary's suggestions that he wants to upgrade at QB, they have to go with Stafford or Sanchez here.

No way Brown goes here. While not much of a reach, I think there is much better value on the board then him. 49ers have to pick Stafford if he's still available. The whole thing on the psych man getting in his head is crap, as Singletary is insane himself.
I also think that Brandon Pettigrew has an outside shot here, if the 49ers are as down on Davis as they should be by now.
And what about Andre Smith? I know he supposedly has dropped because of his actions lately, but I know the 49ers front office has publicly stated their confidence in him should they end up with the young man.

There is no way they pass on a QB here, or at least try to trade down 1 spot and take whichever QB is left. I can't believe they wouldn't take a QB here, and would be comfortable rolling with Shaun Hill.

They dont HAVE to take a QB here to upgrade. You can upgrade without spending $40 million.
But i would be willing to bet there is no way the Pettigrew goes to SF.

You need a QB to be a title contender... all these teams passing on QBs when they obiously don't have one are just wasting money on picks that will wither on their declining teams. Besides the Ravens (and they took a shot for a franchise QB twice in the first round and found one)you HAVE to have a franchise QB to be relevant... skipping on that becasue it won't have the immediate returns is why those teams continue to be bottom feeders. IMHO.

the browns would now like to trade brady quinn to get back into the first rounder and grab one of these qbs... much like they did when brady quinn slid

i agree with ruggerbob. there is no way they SHOULD pass up a franchise qb here. there's no great point in waiting a year or two later anyway. they drafted smith over rodgers... bad call... instead of waiting a year for leinart.... prob another bad call. this GM will prob never be a success because he will never move on from alex smith. smith is not an option anymore. even the coach didnt want him. only this GM. the smart thing to do would have been to maybe traded for a worthy backup for compitition, like MIN did, or draft a first day pick to be the successor. and in this draft, with both sanchez and stafford out there, u have to take them here. this mock is becoming very strange. with the 31st pick, maybe i'll be forced to draft stafford or sanchez on ARZ lol
