Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 16
After typing up a nice little piece on the Chargers selecting Tyson Jackson, our mock GM Justin was shocked to see the Texans jump on the LSU defensive end. Undaunted, Justin switched gears to linebacker:
If I were actually running the team, ComPlainian Tomlinson would not have been signed to an extension and the pick here would be the thunder to Darren Sproles' lightning -- Beanie Wells. However with the RBs currently on the roster and the commitment made to each, that pick is unlikely.
The defense has mini-holes everywhere. Last year I selected Kenny Philips, and even after a year of okay play from Antione Cason, I think he would have been a better pick. This year there is no Safety on the board worthy of being taken this high.
A duo of Rey Maualuga and Shawne Merriman would be a feared combination, especially in a division of teams built to run first pass second. He is seen as a can't miss prospect, is a product of nearby USC, and fills a need. With question marks surrounding almost every Charger linebacker, this is the smart pick. (For the record, as a Patriots fan I hope this doesn't happen. Greg call me we can swing a deal. Give me #23 and San Diego's 2nd rounder back)
With the 16th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Rey Maualuga, LB USC

how can you call this mock draft credible if matt stafford is still on the board after 16 selections ?

Cause he sucks?
Ever heard of Aaron Rodgers? Don't tell me you think Alex Smith is better than Rodgers. The only reason that Stafford is high on all the other mock drafts you see out there is because a lot of teams high in the draft can use him, but as you get further in the draft the teams picking don't need a QB... that's probably why they are picking later.

I tend to agree with those who see Stafford as "not #1 material". Seriously, there's a real chance the Lions bail on him at #1, and if that happens Stafford's chances of being invited to Roger Goodell's suite on draft day increase exponentially.
Picking the lineman is safer...and the Lions need to be safe these days.

Drunkmonkey is right. Stafford is so high on the board because hes needed by the worst teams. If both he and Sanchez are available after pick 10 there is a chance one of them could tumble to the 20s.
If Stafford doesnt sign with DET before the 25th, he better bring some Snickers for him and Sanchez. Cause its gunna be awhile.

Haha, that would be a great Snickers commercial.
"Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a Snickers."
