McCown still looks like the favorite in Tampa

Byron Leftwich's Sunday morning signing adds needed competition to the Buccaneers' quarterback situation. The terms of Leftwich's contract, however, promise him nothing.
Leftwich's deal:
2009: $2 million salary
2010: $2 million salary + $3.5 million roster bonus
At first glance Leftwich's contract mirrors Luke McCown's ($7.5 million over two years). McCown got $2.5 million to sign, though, and Leftwich doesn't appear to have received any guaranteed money. There would be no cap hit to cut him.
The Bucs could conceivably draft Josh Freeman 19th or use a premium pick another passer, which would leave them with four quarterbacks (McCown, Leftwich, Josh Johnson, rookie) after Brian Griese is released. The new coaching staff seems high on Johnson and is in no rush to give up on last year's fifth-round pick.
Tampa will allow McCown and Leftwich to compete evenly in training camp as Johnson occupies the third-string role. But it's worth noting that Leftwich's skill set isn't ideal for the West Coast offense coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski employs and there's a chance Leftwich will struggle in practice. Leftwich didn't take to Bill Musgrave's West Coast tutelage during his time in Jacksonville.
Leftwich may offer more upside, and his ability to power the ball downfield would seem to make Big Byron an excellent fit with deep threat receiver Antonio Bryant. But the contract he received shows little commitment from the Bucs. Leftwich will need to overcome his past struggles in this offense and outperform McCown by a sizable margin to secure the first-team job. If not, Leftwich could find himself looking for work again.
