Jets' interest reflects well on Miles Austin

The Jets will host Cowboys restricted free agent Miles Austin on Friday. If the Jets are serious about acquiring him, they'll need to fork over their second-round pick (No. 52 overall) and a contract, probably somewhere between Nate Washington's six-year, $27M deal and Brandon Jones' five-year, $16.5M pact.
Austin, who entered the league undrafted out of Monmouth, has only 18 career catches for 354 yards (19.7 YPC) and three touchdowns.
However, the 24-year-old has obvious ability. Austin was Monmouth's all-time leading receiver, so it isn't like he's new to catching passes. He ran 4.47 at the 2006 Combine and goes 6'3/215. Among receivers who saw fewer than 50 targets in 2008, Austin was the fourth-most productive according to Football Outsiders.
Highly respected Cowboys WRs coach Ray Sherman, who interviewed for the Rams' head-coaching job this offseason, talked up Austin's potential in summer 2008 and Jerry Jones has referred to Austin's breakout potential all offseason.
It's hard to say definitively where Austin would be a better fantasy bet. He'd likely have the opportunity for more targets as a Jet, but New York also may lean towards a run-first offense under Rex Ryan (OC Brian Schottenheimer will have something to say about that). In Dallas, Austin would have a much better quarterback but Patrick Crayton, Roy E. Williams, and Jason Witten to compete with for looks.
Either way, the Jets' visit is confirmation that NFL brass outside Dallas considers Austin a legitimate wide receiver prospect with serious upside. While Austin is still unlikely to emerge as a starting-caliber fantasy player this year, he's worth rostering in just about any dynasty format and will be worth monitoring closely as the redraft season nears.
