Canceling out Cutler options

I handicapped the Cutler field this morning over on NBCSports.com. The surprising name that keeps popping up, especially in the Denver Post, is the Washington Redskins.

I put them as as relatively long shots because they have limited resources in terms of cap room and draft picks. And Cutler seems unlikely to go anywhere without getting a new contract.

Carolinaand Minnesota continue to make it clear they aren't in the mix. The favorites, in my mind, remain Detroit and Tampa. They are from the NFC, they were in play before, and they have picks to burn. San Francisco makes for a fun dark horse. All of the above would be poor fits for Cutler's fantasy value.

How would the Bucs or Lions be a poor fit for Culters fantasy value? I think throwing the Lions with Cutler would be just as good as being in Den. Plus they have the bad defense to allow Cutler to keep gun slinging so they can stay in games.

Cutler to Calvin? Not too shabby for fantasy purposes.

As a lifelong 49er fan, I would KILL to get Cutler on my team. He would be the first legitimate QB in San Fran since Steve Young (no, I don't count Jeff Garcia). I agree his value would take a hit, but don't discount what a weapon Frank Gore is and if Vernon Davis can get his head on straight (a big IF), Cutler could still be a top 10 fantasy QB. He would change the entire look of the team in San Francisco and I personally believe they'd knock Arizona off and claim the division title.

Of course, the 49ers are cheap and I'm sure it won't happen. But that was a nice dream for a minute.

Calvin Johnson is swell, but in Denver Cutler had a real OL, Marshall, Royal, Scheffler, and a tolerable ground game. I like Kevin Smith, but no OL, no TE, and no real WR2-3 (except when Martz made them look decent) means clearly Cutler takes a big hit going to Detroit. As for Tampa, that might be even worse, hard to say. Better OL and nice ground game, but with no great WRs (I like A Bryant but cmon) and Winslow being uninjured only half the time, and with a solid D to keep scoring low, it's definitely worse than staying in Denver fantasy wise. As a prior commenter noted, San Fran could actually be semi-interesting with a real QB like Cutler, but it won't happen. Not sure why Carolina doesn't have the brains to dump Delhomme, but apparently they don't. Ditto Minnesota.

This is strictly guesswork, and certainly goes against the very logical idea posted on Rotoworld via John Clayton that Detroit and Cleveland do a 3 way deal, but I would guess the Jets swoop in with a sweet offer -- their owner wants to win NOW (see Favre) and QB is their biggest hole (you spend that much on the OL and then go with Clemens/Ainge/Ratliff?)
