Could Earl emerge as a pearl in Chicago?

Bears coach Lovie Smith announced on Monday that last year’s third-round pick, Earl Bennett, will be given a chance to compete for a starting job this summer.
At first glance it’s a bit of a surprise considering the rookie didn’t record a single catch last year. But the local media has been trumpeting Bennett’s emergence since the offseason began.
Is Bennett worth the disproportionate offseason buzz?
The Vanderbilt early entrant was considered one of the most “NFL ready” of the rookie receivers, yet he never saw the field despite the Bears’ obvious need for an upgrade on the pedestrian trio of Marty Booker, Brandon Lloyd, and Rashied Davis.
His potential for a significant role says more about the state of the Bears' receiving corps than it does about Bennett's own progress. This a team where Devin Hester is considered the hands-down No. 1 receiver, with nary a warm body to line up on the opposite side.
When considering future value, keep in mind that he has yet to earn the job and may be usurped by a first-round rookie such as Hakeem Nicks or Darrius Heywood-Bay. In fact, he's still sitting on the waiver wire in my long-time, 12-team Dynasty league.
Even if Bennett does line up as the Week 1 starter, he would have little immediate fantasy value with Kyle Orton spreading the ball around to Hester, Greg Olsen, and Matt Forte. Look elsewhere for your 2009 breakout receiver.

i agree. anything could happen in training camp or early in the season, where davis or really anyone could trump him again. very risky but atleast hes got the opportunity.
btw.. just reading the news wire, what do u guys think about a resurgent year for t.heap? no chance? still a blocker i suppose.

See Gregg's post from 2 hours after your comment. I agree with him. Heap's value is totally shot . . . but I guess you were asking before L.J. Smith signed.
