Blockbuster non-PPR Dynasty Trade Proposal

I am in a 12-team dynasty league with others from the industry. No points are awarded for receptions. I have a blockbuster proposal on the table and wanted to get some opinions. Especially from Scott C. -- the dynasty commenter aficionado on this blog.

Here's the offer:

I get
Turner, Michael ATL RB
Johnson, Larry KCC RB
Moore, Lance NOS WR
Round 1, Pick 9 Draft Pick

I give
Gore, Frank SF RB
Marshall, Brandon DEN WR
Washington, Nate TEN WR
Round 3, Pick 11 Draft Pick

I hate giving up Marshall, but the "knucklehead factor" (a Chris Wesseling-coined term) on Baby T.O. is high and I'm somewhat deep at receiver. There are also several late first-round caliber dynasty picks coming in this NFL Draft. We start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1RB/WR, 1TE, 1K, 1DEF.

My current roster:

QBs: Matt Cassel > David Garrard > Luke McCown
RBs: Frank Gore > Pierre Thomas > Derrick Ward > Tim Hightower > LeRon McClain > Michael Bush > Ricky Williams > LaMont Jordan
WRs: Larry Fitzgerald > Brandon Marshall > Torry Holt > Miles Austin > Mike Walker > Nate Washington > Mario Manningham > Jason Hill > Devin Thomas
TE: Chris Cooley
K: Nate Kaeding

Factors to consider: Michael Turner's 370+ carry season; the other owner is also dangling Chad Johnson, who I perhaps could swap in for Lance Moore; San Francisco's offense potentially falling back off the cliff after losing Mike Martz (for Gore's sake); the draft pick upgrade; Marshall and L.J.'s likely suspensions; L.J.'s potential release

Yes, if you could get Chad Johnson I would do that over Moore.

Johnson is a yardage hound and Palmer is declaring his elbow 100%.

(That would make it an even bigger boon for you in my opinion)

First off, don't take my name as an insult. That' the name I always use to post here.

Second, do it. Your trade partner has got Nate Washington fever and Kerry Collins is throwing the ball. I'd even do it without the first rounder you're getting. You can scour the wire for a WR replacement, you won't find HB's there of the calibre you are getting back. You start 3 hbs (basically). HB is a limited commodity. I think it's a great deal for you. You hit a home-run on that first rounder you are getting and its going to be a raping in your favour.

Cheers,
C.O.

Cheers,

I'm not sure why anyone would want Gore over Turner in a non-PPR dynasty league.

Facts:
(1) Several people have referred to the "curse of 370". Yes, it's a valid issue, though that concern is more about only one year (how Turner performs in 09-10) -- it doesn't mean Turner's career is now over because he had 370 carries one time. Silly to get too worked up about that when talking about a young RB with little overall mileage in a dynasty league (I assume you care more than just about 09-10). Also, who is more likely to get hurt, (a) Gore who gets hurt every year, who has 1,111 career touches, and who looks like he'll be required to pound the rock (as opposed to getting in space and avoiding as much contact) a higher percentage of time than in the past or (b) Turner who has only one real year of usage, has only 631 career touches, and has proven to be durable despite heavy usage? At BEST, the injury risk is equal, which means the "curse of 370" is no more than a wash with the "curse of being frank gore's lower body".

(2) Since it's no-PPR, let's look at TD's and yards: (a) Gore 8 TDs and 1,409 yards last year vs. (b) Turner 17 TDs and 1,740 yards last year. Yes, Gore had a monster season back in '06. The NFC West defenses were downright brutal that year and while they're still not good, they're getting better.

(3) What's the case for optimism that 2008 will not be repeated in 2009? Turner -- QB should hopefully only improve; OL maybe too. Gore -- QB is a mess right now, and few playmakers elsewhere (I'd take Roddy W over Josh M, VD, and the gang any day). Things appear to be going forward in Atlanta and backward in San Fran. Even if that changes, will it change enough to make Gore's numbers approach Turner's?

I don't have time to go in depth but I would not do this deal.

I agree with Kirby on almost all counts.

- The best player in the deal is Frank Gore. Turner had a better 2008, but fantasy leaguers always put far too much emphasis on the previous season. I think Gore has a talent edge as well as a consistency edge since Turner will be so reliant on playing average to poor defenses and finding the end zone weekly (even in a non-PPR league, a total lack of involvement in the passing game hurts consistency).

- Marshall is a dolt, sure, but he's also a young stud WR. You'd be selling way too low right now. Or to put it differently, there are a ton of Marshall lovers out there who would pay a lot more to get him. And, as has been mentioned, LJ is every bit the knucklehead that Marshall is.

- Mid-to-late first round picks are the most over-rated entities in Dynasty leagues. The failure rate is off the charts, and we generally don't know squat about what kind of NFL players these rookies will be until after we see them with their new teams.

I wouldn't touch that deal if I were you.

you guys ought to go back and look at debates like this from a year or two ago and declare winners!

Evan, you've got to unload Frank Gore. The scene in Niner-land will be a lot like it was in Detroit after Martz left. Or, a lot like it was in San Francisco in 2007. Even in his elite 2006 year, Gore didn't put up double digit TDs. The last two years he averaged around 20th in DYAR and 25th in DVOA. 2009 for San Francisco will be a lot like it would have been in Detroit last year if they HADN'T had Megatron.

You should also try to get Chad Johnson to replace Larry Johnson in the trade. If you do this trade, your talent at WR collapses. In a 2-WR league, depth is less valuable because your chance of picking the right guy each week to pair with Fitzgerald is not very good (although one of the 4 or 5 equally viable bench players will inevitably light it up). There's a good chance OchoCinco will be worthless next year, but if he is healthy, there's a very real chance he'd slot in as your #2 receiver. (Lance Moore's value rests on scoring a probably unsustainable number of TDs again and the continued prevalence of injuries to Colston, Shockey, Bush, etc. Otherwise the pie is split too many ways.)

Larry Johnson has almost zero value. Even if he is healthy, LJ's best case scenario is to land with a team like the Saints and vulture a few TDs before the team realizes what KC already knows: LJ lacks both speed and power and needs a free release through the line to get enough momentum going to hit anybody. That's hardly the profile of a goal line back.

If LJ has a very good year, he still fits behind Pierre Thomas and Derrick Ward as your 4th back. More likely, he fits below Le'Ron McClain and Tim Hightower. And since LJ is TO without the talent, there's a very real chance he's out of the league by midseason.
