Monday night musings

Quiet day on the blog, but hope you caught the receiver ranks and my column full of lists. Since I clearly can't write without numbering things, here are a few thoughts on Monday night's game.
1. Marques Colston's 70-yard touchdown saved his night, but Drew Brees is looking Lance Moore's way on the key downs. In many ways, Moore is catching a lot of the same passes Colston used to. Sight adjustments, red zone tosses. A lot of timing plays Colston has missed in practice.
2. Deuce McAllister's franchise-setting touchdown was an awesome moment to savor as a Saints fan. And Sean Payton's liberal use of Pierre Thomas also shows that Payton won't let sentiment get in his way of game-planning. Thomas is realizing all that sleeper potential we talked about before the season and should be a big factor the rest of the way.
3. I know I can improve in every aspect of my job. Otherwise, what's the point? One part of the gig that I spend a lot of time on are the weekly ranks. Watching tonight's game hammered home a thought that has been in the back of my head lately: That I've been adjusting too much for matchups in receiver ranks.
FootballOutsiders wrote a great article two years about the effect of tough matchups on fantasy points scoring. It's twice as important for quarterbacks and running backs as it is for wide receivers. Lance Moore's demolition of the Packers is only one example, but there are so many factors that go into pass defense. When it's close, just play the best receiver. Moore has earned the right to start every week. Was it really less than two months ago we were just getting to know him?
4. Ryan Grant may not end up with a huge night, but his burst is back. He should be a solid RB2 asset down the stretch.

Will Lance Moore's value drop when Bush gets back and takes some of those quick dump offs that Moore seems to be getting right now?

Gregg, glad to see you appreciate what Moore's been doing, especially over the past four weeks. I was worried when you put him in the 3rd tier in your WR rankings. Seriously, he should be no lower than 2nd tier when, like you stated, he's an every week start.

Gregg,
I agree with you on this one. I remember when Colston became the new Horn and Henderson emerged as the boom or bust bomb guy. Now Moore is the new Colston and Colston is looking a lot more like last year's Henderson. Moore is the man for now. Maybe next year Meachem could be the new..........oh well forget it..just draft Brees and be done.
