Not bullish on Marc Bulger

Marc Bulger and I have history. He's won me some fantasy leagues and money. I'm predisposed to liking him. Who doesn't love beautifully timed 20-yard passes?

The Marc Bulger I watched early in his career is not there anymore. I'm writing this today because his 300-yard effort against the Patriots will probably have many hoping for a revival. It's unlikely. Donnie Avery has given the Rams offense a huge shot in the arm, but Bulger is still showing the same bad habits from last season. He's falling away from pressure and doesn't hang tough in the pocket.

If there is such a thing as an ugly 300 yard-game, Bulger had it versus the banged-up Patriots secondary. There were plays to be made, but the accuracy and pocket presence were lacking. Bulger also isn't helped by his teammates. His wideouts are poor other than Avery and the offensive line is average at best. While the schedule is favorable, remember that Bulger has only one game over 200 yards all season. Sunday's stats against New England were an anomaly.

I thought about picking up Bulger as my backup QB, but looked closer at his stats for the other games this season and passed.
It should also be noted that SJax was a late scratch for the Pats' game and that caused the Rams to focus more on the pass than in previous games. Once Sjax returns(week 9 please!!!)I expect Bulger's stat line to return to around the 175 yards and 1 TD territory he was in before the week 8 game.

Bulger may not be playing very well, but he is still a valuable fantasy commodity considering the schedule which is even more than favorable. Of their remaining 8 games, 6 are indoors, one is at San Fran, and one is at the horrible Jets secondary. Considering the way weather can affect fantasy playoff games, finishing at home against Seattle and San Francisco is extremely helpful.

Also, Bulger may only have one 200+ game, but at this point the non-Avery games can be considered non-representative data points. Bulger would have also scored a lot more fantasy points if Dallas hadn't played so poorly that they shut it down the whole second half.

Moreover, having SJax should boost the passing numbers, not hurt them. His presence forces the defense to play the pass differently, and, if they could ever get Pace, Bulger, SJax, and Avery on the field at the same time, Saunders could use Jackson effectively in the passing game. 60 yards a game receiving from Jackson would boost Bulger's numbers.

I'm with you Dude Abides. I understand where Gregg is coming from, but Bulger's schedule is quite favorable. Especially during the fantasy playoffs.

He may not be a lock QB1. But you could do worse the 2nd half of the season.

Jesus... sorry for the multiple posts.

Fear not, my son, it was an innocent mistake, not a sin.

I know this is a thread about Bulger, but how do you guys feel about Avery?

"As we've mentioned in the past few Waiver Wired articles, Avery's 4.25 speed is a problem for opposing defenses."

HA!

Wesseling must think we cannot read as, last time I checked (5 seconds ago), Avery was 4th on the WR list from last week behind the epic Josh "Anquan Colston" Morgan, owner of the impressive week 8 ZERO, and only "worth a look in deeper leagues" from 2 weeks ago. When you put anyone with a pulse and a low ownership rate into a Monday article, it is not exactly improbable that you will mention players prior to them performing well. Skill is demonstrated by focusing the attention on those players BEFORE they go for 163 yards and a TD because, by then, everyone knows, even Chris Wesseling.

ps - Josh "Anquan Colston" Morgan
