Don't expect wideouts to fill Colston's shoes

Another one bites the dust. Marques Colston was the latest victim of the Week 1 carnage, and fantasy owners will be scrambling to fill his WR1 production. I wouldn't look to fill it with Saints. David Patten is certainly worth owning, but he's the only wideout likely to be remotely consistent. Devery Henderson has failed in his other eight lives. Lance Moore, Robert Meachem, and Devery Henderson will also be competing with the three useful tight ends New Orleans has, not to mention the running backs. The Saints will spread it around.

If there are benefactors to this injury, they are already in people's lineups. Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey combined for 15 targets in Week 1, and that number could go up. Pierre Thomas and the Saints running game may also see more attempts, which could hurt Drew Brees slightly.

Sean Payton finds a way to get production in the passing game, so don't expect Brees to fall off a cliff. Just don't expect any of the Saints wideouts to suddenly turn into Colston. There are better pickups elsewhere.

Whew. Trading Colston for Brandon Marshall before the season began looks like an even better move now.

Gregg - looking at Brees' 2006, without a real #1 WR, he still managed to put up 4000+ and 26 TDs. Heck, even go back to his years in SD - where his #1 option was Gates, he still put up great numbers. Given Payton's game plan, it'll be interesting to see the passing numbers in NO and see who steps up.

I have Colston as my #1 WR. My other WRs are Evans, Crayton, Curry and Mason. Only free agents that seem viable to me are Matt Jones, Courtney Taylor, Hank Baskett and Logan Payne (all from Rotoworld site). What should I do to replace him?

May I add, that I start 2 WRs and 1 FLEX

Gregg,

Where would you rate Patten on this weeks waiver WR pickups? Obviously behind Royal, but who else would you put ahead of him?

Gregg,
I completely think u have under estimated Drew. I will have to adjust to his throwing options but he aint going over the cliff....

I'm glad i have megatron.

How much bet hedging & spreading eggs to different baskets do you all do?

I have three leagues and Brees is my starter in all of them. One of my backups has an appealing matchup this week (Aaron Rodgers at Detroit) and it's a tempting hedge. If Brees outscores him, I still cash in with two leagues.

With Grant hurting, it seems like a fair guess that Rodgers will get enough attempts to have a pretty high floor this week. Thoughts?
