Taylor trade kicks off season

The 2008 football season started, appropriately, on a Sunday. The Redskins began training camp yesterday, and lost one of their key defensive pieces, Philip Daniels, for the season. By the end of the day, they had acquired Jason Taylor to fill the gap. It's a fine deal for both sides, but it's better for Miami. That's mostly because I don't think Washington will be a contender this season in the toughest division in football.
Jason LaCanfora is all over the Taylor stuff at Redskins Insider, in addition to other Washington news. Antwaan Randle El is healthy again, although we still don't know his role exactly. One point J La raises is Jason Taylor's new position on the left side. That traditionally means fewer sacks. As an IDP owner, I liked him better in Miami. Back with some more links I saw while catching up in a bit.

its really a win for the skins because its not like danny snyder does anything useful with our draft picks anyway, and the skins don't have to win the nfc east, they just have to secure a wild card spot like last year. and as if this team didnt already play with a passion, jason taylor brings it every play

Hey Gregg,
Why do you believe the Skins are not a contender this year in the tough NFC East? Let's see, we beat the Giants at their place last year when it was a must win. We had them beat at our place earlier in the year. We beat the Cowboys at our place when again, we had too. We were 1 interception away from beating them at their place earlier in the year. And we split with the Eagles. We did nothing during free agency to make our team worse, only added offense playmakers on offense. Taylor adds a big time pass rusher to our defense opposite Andre Carter. I just don't understand how you can say we won't contend. Back up your comments man!

I'm afraid the standings at the end of the season will back up his comments quite well.

I hated all the wasted draft picks by Snyder on washed up players, but the guys he DID draft the last few years weren't too bad: Sean Taylor (rest his soul), Chris Cooley, LaRon Landry, and two guys who were injured last year, LB Rocky McIntosh & CB Carlos Rodgers have shown promise.
This trade was a no brainer for Washington because of the injuries to their DE's. Miami made out well with a number 2 pick, IM JUST GLAD IT DIDNT COST US A #1 !!

I feel sorry for Washington fans because of their terrible owner, but, anything could happen. I didn't think Pittsburgh would win in '05 (Go Steelers!), and didn't think the Jints would win in '07. They have a very good shot at the playoffs, and from there, it is "any given Sunday."

The Redskins aren't going to be true playoff contenders for at least 3 years. Campbell may be good (I havent been impressed) but no matter what, he's going to need a few more years under his belt to make them a really good team.
Acquiring Jason Taylor and trading away draft picks is a mistake. Taylor only wants to play ONE year, but will probably end up playing two. A gamble on a rookie would have better suited the Redskins for next few years.
