The Marshawn Lynch case

I've already had some people ask about the Marshawn Lynch case, so let's discuss it here. First of all, there is always some discomfort discussing the fantasy football impact of something as serious as a hit-and-run. But if it affects Lynch, a top-eight pick in our current rankings, we can't ignore the implications for too long.

First thing to mention: Lynch has not been charged. Today we learned a couple key points, though: Lynch's SUV was found at his house after the accident. And there is a maximum of a one year penalty in jail for leaving the scene of an accident in Buffalo. This is a Class A misdemeanor.

It's unclear whether Lynch was driving the car. But the victim suffered two bruises and seven stitches because of the accident. Everyone involved is amazingly lucky she wasn't hurt worse.

Please only continue if you are ready for some obvious speculation from a non-legal expert

My cynical gut-reaction after watching these types of cases is that Lynch will escape this like he escapes tacklers. For a first-time offender, it sounds like a case that would not risk resulting in jail time - if it ever got to trail. Since no one was seriously hurt, Lynch would be unlikely to be punished by the NFL even if he was convicted, which could take a year.

This all assumes that Lynch is not in the league's substance abuse program, which is confidential. That would complicate matters, but he's clean for all we know.

Lynch continues to practice at the Bills facility, but will have to meet with police soon. I would be very surprised if he has to stop practicing or playing anytime this season.

this does not matter what so ever. he's had plenty of time to bpay off one of his buddies. i have a strong suspicion that somebody is gonna come outta the wood work and say they were driving. (then go cash a big check) lynch will say he was a passenger and didnt wanna squeel on his boy. wagers anybody?

right on the money mark. if my cynicism has taught me anything, it's that america's a safe haven for rich criminals. whoa! that's some irresponsible speculation right there.
whatever the case, as far as fantasy football goes (low on the totem pole in the scope of things) this won't matter to me. i don't have him in a keeper league, and i think he's over rated at 8. i'd take him as a really high RB2. MAYBE late RB1.
i haven't laid out my top 8 yet, and lynch had a great rookie year with a terrible offense (1100 yds 7 tds). but i didn't see any improvement out of that passing game (unless you count the progression of edwards) and i think teams will be more prepared to deal with him. of course, we said that last year.
so that i don't get skewered on this, i can see the other side of the coin... i would just rather get someone who's done it longer to ensure fantasy points out of my first rb taken... sort of the "marvin harrison as your second pick" type thinking of the past 10 years

yeah im having trouble guaging his value also. ive been offered a trade in my dynasty league with myself getting lynch and the 6 pick for the 1pick (mcfadden). im just not sure on either side. its a ppr league that gives bonus pts for long tds. thats why im leaning towards keeping the pick. i think mcfadden will catch about 80 balls.

While this story is strange in the fact that it's being dragged on so long, it probably won't affect his value for the upcoming season.

I'm having trouble seperating Lynch, LJ, Grant and McGahee. Lynch will be ranked as high as #8 or as low as #11 by the time I sort it out which makes him a late first rounder regardless.

I would make that trade Mark, but I think McFadden will be a bust so I may be bias. Your decision will have to be based on what you project McFad will become.

yeah thats the tough part. i think mcfadden's gonna be more like westbrook, whereas lynch just screams willis mcgahee to me.( not that thats a bad thing). westbrook cuz of my league scoring puts up huge numbers. (my league really rewards rbs that catch). sorry i changed the subject alittle. just been driving myself crazy with the whole trade him or not thing. sorry

Mark, if your league is going to have a rookie draft round then you have to ask yourself who do you think is going to be there with the 6th pick that will be worth anything impactful this year. Mcfadden is going to be on a crappy team with an awesome o-line. The raiders love to run and he will get big points this year. I have Lynch (who I nabbed with the 3rd pick last year in the rookie round) in a keeper league and I have the first pick in the rookie round this year so I am going to take Mcfadden. That being said, I would never give up that 1st overall for soemone and at the 6th. Who knows, Mcfadden may be a bust but if he has a year like Adrian Peterson did you will hate yourself and fantasy football. Unless your league has a farm system rookie rounds are tough because most of the time there are only a few guys that will make an impact right away for teams - the rest need to develope and usually will get dropped throughout the year (after getting drafted)for some unknown guy that is suddenly putting up big points. Let's face it it will be hard to save a roster spot all year for some guy you are going to grab with that 6th pick.

It seems to me that law-enforcement takes hit&run (especially with pedestrians) pretty seriously. They've identified the vehicle, and the owner, and now only need to put somebody in the driver's seat. Who knows if it was Lynch, but it doesn't look good. For perspective, the Harrison gunfight story was a lot less clear cut.

Mark: Regardless of this situation, I like the trade for you. McFadden might be great, but he might bust, too. In Lynch, you get a sure-thing top 10 dynasty back and with the number 6, you could take whichever falls from the top 5 of Forte, Kevin Smith or Felix Jones; or you could take Matt Ryan/whichever WR you like best.

Unless you're one of those with a man-crush on McFadden, the offer is good value (seems like the other guy is over-paying) and taking it would be sound dynasty-league strategy.
